Sam doesn’t exactly remember the moment he and Bucky became Mom and Dad. It is a running joke. A stupid one, furthermore. It kinda annoyed him at first, at least up until Kamala mentioned Bucky was Mom, so now Sam actually finds it funny.

Sam chuckles faintly. “Truth or dare, Barnes.”
Bucky rolls his eyes, but a smirk shows on his face nonetheless. “Dare.”
“I dare you to go three times, baby. No pulling out. Not until you’re done.”OR

When Bucky leaned an inch closer so did Sam. Mentally, he strangled each and every protest his brain tried to emit.
“This won’t make things weird, will it?” Bucky halted a breadth from his lips with that bit of babble; Sam damn near screeched. He wasn’t having it, not when the countdown was already down to five.
“Weirder than what? Weird is the foundation this entire relationship was built on.” Inside he could hear the celebratory shouts and cheers of a new year as he soldiered on. He yanked the front of Bucky’s shirt, pulling him flush against his chest. Set in his course. “We met when you jumped on the fucking roof of my car and ripped the steering wheel out. We turned to literal dust and somehow ended up fighting side by side five years later. Shit’s always gonna be weird for us. Aliens, hulks, now we got vampires in the mix? Just fucking kiss me all right?”

“When’s the last time someone else stitched you up?” Bucky asked. He was still speaking in that breathy, low tone, like he was afraid something might shatter if he raised his voice.
“I don’t know,” admitted Sam. “Years, probably.”
His answer seemed to physically wound Bucky. For a moment, Sam was worried he might cry. Instead, he just lifted his left hand; touched a single finger to the side of the wound. Sam shivered from the cold touch of the metal.
“Is there anything else I can do?” Bucky said, watching the way Sam’s ribcage rose and fell with each breath. The question, for some reason, made Sam want to slam his head against a wall. He’d heard it often, but in all the wrong places. Never when he needed it. And never like this.

Sam and Bucky have this thing between them, and it keeps getting stronger, and something is bound to break. If only either of them could bring themselves to acknowledge it.
