Summary
If you were to ask Benoit Blanc, the famed private detective, what the worst part of his job was, he’d reply with an appropriately poetic and somber declaration of the deterioration of the human soul to greed and malice.
However if you were to ask Phillip, non-famed husband to Ben Blanc, what the worst part of his job was, he'd say it was the broody moods his love fell into during the court stretch of his cases. Luckily, after many years of marriage he'd gotten quite talented at finding distractions for the both of them.

Summary
There is a hole in the world in the library, and there is a hole in the world in your head, and there is a hole in the world in your former partner’s chest, deep in his lungs. Maybe you can do something about it, before it is too late.
JEAN VICQUEMARE: An exhale, a flutter of his lashes. “Huh - Harry - time is it-”
SAVOIR FAIRE: It is the sweetest and softest you have ever heard him say your name.
PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT: It makes your knees weak.
YOU: You lean on his desk, palm flat, leaning over him. “It’s early, Jean.”
COMPOSURE: Your voice as soft as his.
JEAN VICQUEMARE: He opens his eyes slowly. They track over you, one pale, one paler.
VISUAL CALCULUS: The lamplight makes them nearly see-through. If you could just gaze into them a moment longer, you will remember everything.

Summary
It’s when you see Harry in Martinaise after two weeks - two weeks of holding the fucking fort down, two weeks of silently - or not so silently - fuming about detective fuckstick doing jack-all on his seaside vacation - that you remember the old bit you had going on for awhile. Back when you were horse cops, before he started his Cop of the Apocalypse shit. You used to tease Harry about the white horse he used to ride, back when you were first partnered together. How in his patrol cloak, he used to look like the Dolorian personification of death. A tall gaunt figure in a cloak on a white horse, because the cloak hid his beer gut. A bad omen, a harbinger of doom. Children, idiots, and old women used to skitter away from you as you’d ride through the streets of Jamrock. Would hide in their shacks and watch you ride by. He liked it.
So did you.Bookmarked by Norpad

Summary
After the loss of the station’s Coupris 40, the Captain tells all of you you’ve got to fundraise some money to replace it. Bake sale, motor carriage wash, increase in taking bribes - ha ha, he says, just kidding, don’t do that one - he doesn’t care. Just do it.
You get a brilliant idea:
YOU: “We should do one of those calendars, you know, the ones with firefighters, and the Moralintern, and the Coast Guard-”
JEAN VICQUEMARE: “They make ones with women, too, Harry."
YOU: “Do they really? Kim, is that true?”
KIM KITSURAGI: Kim shrugs a shoulder, as if to say, don’t ask me.
(Or, they do the damn calendar).

Summary
“I just can’t- I fucking can’t believe this! How long have you been a cop?”
Jean’s insides bristle. He was asked to transfer to the 41st - not even asked, actually, asked implies there was a choice. This wasn’t a choice. Not that he would have refused at the time - the 41st is the place where anyone who wants to be anybody goes, at least while they are young and stupid enough to crave a hero’s death.
No, Jean was told to pack his things. That *someone* at the 41st pulled some strings and wanted him. Jean doesn’t know who, Jean doesn’t ask those kinds of questions. He’s starting to consider that it was a lie. Maybe his precinct traded him in in exchange for someone from here. And he’s the sloppy seconds no one wants. That would track.
And it sure feels that way too, watching Sergeant Du Bois rub at his forehead shaking his head, his cigarette wasting away between his fingers. One thing is clear - if anybody at the 41st didn’t pick Jean, it’s Harrier Du Bois, who looks two seconds away from kicking a trashcan and throwing a fit about it.
“Two years, sir.”
Harrier closes his eyes, takes a deep breath and leaves the room without telling Jean to come with.

Summary
It’s spring, it’s Jean’s first time leading the task force, and Harry swings an arm around him. The paperwork is nearly done and elation is still fresh on everybody’s face. He ruffles Jean’s crow black hair and announces to the bullpen day’s over boys, we’re doing dinner, drinks and strippers, gotta make this one one to remember.
Jean doesn’t usually enjoy joining such nights - he prefers drinking in the dark quiet of a worn out dive with regular bathroom pitstops for lines - but today is a special day. He leans his shoulder into Harry’s chest and knocks his head against his, laughing . Sure, he hears himself say, do your fucking worse, Du Bois. Harry winks. Thought you’d never ask.

"God. Everyone over thirty has a Dora, Harry, some person or event that fucks us over completely. The difference is the rest of us move on with our lives, and you didn’t."
"You don’t talk like you’ve moved on.”
“Fuck you.”
“I just mean you talk like you’re going to be depressed forever.”
“Seven years,” says Jean, fighting the urge to ash his cigarette in Harry’s fucking eyes, “is a pretty goddamn long time.”Bookmarked by Norpad

Summary
After all the abuse, all the hurt, this is what hits Jean the most. The past tense. The kindness in retrospect. The honesty that is no use to him now. It elicits a deeper ache in him than the harshness used to.
"Good for you," Jean spits. "You got the best of everything and it never was enough."
"You were," Harry says, wringing his hands in his lap. "I'm sorry if I didn't love you right. But you were."

Summary
Harry takes a determined step forward, but Kim’s palm is already in the middle of his chest, stopping him.
“Rules, officer.” Kim says in his sternest voice, and Harry bows his head like a begging dog.
“I’ll be so good,” he promises.
“I’m sure.” Kim takes a long breath. This is probably a mistake, but then, maybe it would be nice to live a little. “This is a Mesque-themed place. Behind the curtain is the dance floor, which also features a mechanical bull. People challenge themselves into staying on it as long as possible, often in ridiculous or skimpy outfits. There is a gallery with railings all around the room on the second level that gives great khm…observation spots. Now,” Kim lifts his index finger in the air, severe. “No touching of any kind. People will probably rub on you, but I want you to keep your hands on your drinks for tonight.” He lifts his other fingers in time with the commands he is laying down. “No hollering, no bellowing, no drooling.”
It’s good that there are no more fingers to raise, because Kim is overtaken with the urge of adding, *no barking*, which would be insane, and yet feels necessary to specify somehow.
“That’s a lot of rules,” Harry grumbles.
