Once upon a time, I loved you.
I’m not sure if I was too stupid to realize it or if the love faded after our fight. All I know is that your blossoming smile used to make my chest warm and light and fuzzy. It wasn’t like the adrenaline rush of any crushes back in our teen days– it was smooth, and gentle.
Like ocean waves. Do you remember that trip we took to the seaside one summer, during our last year of university? You were so excited to graduate and move on to bigger things. I was excited to follow you into your bright future.
I think, Subspace, if you made me choose one true thing about love, it would be that love is never a singular thing. It could be that glow of emotion after someone remembers your coffee order, or the morning lull where your coat is pulled on for you. It could be that burn of passion you feel for your partner during those late-night movie talks.
It could be the pain of losing everything, because love is staying even when there is nothing left to stay for.
Or, you loved him too late.

You’d felt filthy for asking more and more of Wifies, each time you’d spoken with him, taking away pieces and then chunks and then entire parts until Wifies was nothing at all. A memory. A shaky breath in the aftermath of it all. A flower print destined to somebody’s diary entry.
(Wifies’s eyes, his uncharacteristically furrowed brows, and the paper thin line that his lips are pressed in, all staring back at you. “Don’t you think that this is stupid?” asks the other, and you do not respond.)

He might as well have been carved out of stone.
The voice, he can place– he’s heard it a million times. Now, it is chipped and static, speech nearly incoherent, grainy and rough, though underneath the layers of armor there is a gentle, lilting quality to it from somewhere back in their boyish times. Things that he had set beside years ago.
The person, he does not remember. His version of this man-turned-murderer came with humor and loud, boisterous quips and the worst taste in jokes, ever. He does not recognize the thing standing quietly in front of him now.
The Spectre has a horrible sense of humor. The universe does, too.

He vaguely hears Chosen let out a muffled mhm, and then, go on. Dark suddenly finds the couch cushions extremely interesting, picking at a loose string of green thread in favor of meeting Chosen's eyes.
