A freak lightning storm hit Eric's city, the rain flooding the streets and causing many a business to remain closed for the day. That, however, did not stop Eric Moore from getting to work early like he always had. Of course, that ended up being the worst, or perhaps the best, decision of his life. “You good?” there was a slight edge to her voice that I couldn’t read. Maybe she thought I was about to drag trouble in with me.
“Yeah, just fell, hit my knee…” I tried to play it cool once again. Not in agony. Not being victimised by a gang of degenerates.
“Sit over there,” she indicated a booth with her chin, “I’ll get you some ice.”
I picked up the beer but found myself wavering. “I don’t want to be any trouble…”
That earned me an impatient snort. I watched Bree’s nostrils flare in amusement. “This is a bar. I have ice.”
So told, I limped my way painfully over toward the nominated booth. The nape of my neck tingled and I paused, suddenly imagining big dark eyes fixed to my back, imagined the predatory interest there - a lion watching a wounded gazelle. I shivered and didn’t look back until I was safely ensconced in the booth’s seat.
