“What would you say,” he asked, “if I told you I was going to hurt you? That you should kill me now?”

She blinked, startled. “I’d ask you why? Where’s this coming from?”

“I’m a demon, Rumi. I’m going to hurt you.”

    Summary

She finds herself thinking of Jinu, of how it had been to see him, to talk to him. There is so much Rumi wants to say to him, so much that she’d wanted to tell him when she thought he was dead. But he’s here now, and yet, the words escape her, fleeing from her grasp. His very presence stirs up new emotions within her, twisting and writhing with a demand to be acknowledged.

It had been much easier to sift through them when he wasn’t here, and even that was a hard-fought battle. But it had been much simpler when all she’d had was her own mind to parse through and sort out, pulling out pieces she had in an effort to complete the puzzle.

Now, though? The board is bigger. His return opens up a whole other set of possibilities, a whole other path before her that she cannot even begin to look into. He’s back, and the floodgates seem to have opened, leaving Rumi disconcerted and questioning, struggling to understand what a path forward looks like now. She’d wanted so badly for him to return; it’s all she’d ever thought about. She hadn’t considered what she’d do after the fact.

    Summary

Jinu can’t leave without Gwi-Ma’s permission, but sometimes he stands under the open and roiling sky and watches the barrier cascade in musical waves overhead, thousands of glimmering blue filaments that undulate with deceptive delicacy, offering, if even for a second, a glimpse of an overworld that rouses itself to song. It is not lost on Jinu that he serves a warped inverse of that purpose down here.

But demons don’t flock to his music. They shy away from it, wilting rather than blooming, because on a very literal level they understand that his voice isn’t for them. Gwi-Ma is a jealous god, and he cannot abide it if the rewards that his gifts reap don’t return to him, always, in the end.

Or: In which Jinu makes choices (a real mixed bag of them), trips into a situationship, regrets everything, lies to himself and others, and decides he wants to be a better person after all, actually—not necessarily in that order.

    Summary

Rumi turns to look at him. “Are you lonely too, Jinu?”
He’s silent a moment, gold eyes burning into black. “Not anymore.”

or, three times that Rumi hated the hideousness of her patterns, and the first time she was told they were beautiful.

    Summary

She knows, now, that she will never truly escape anything. Wherever she looks, she sees him. Her entire world is filled with reminders of him, from the pants she wears to the cards tucked safely away, to the blue fur left around her room, to the soft, gentle warmth emanating from near her heart. The sounds from her performance earlier still echo in her ears, and a phantom touch pulled from her memories ghosts over her hand as though in response.

If there were a word to describe her emotions now, it would be strong. Not inconsequential, not something that she can distract herself from. She can’t hide from this; she can’t walk away.

And now, she knows that she doesn’t want to. She doesn’t want to lose this, lose him, the first person who made her feel like she wasn’t simply a mistake. Like her patterns didn’t condemn her to a lesser, underserving existence; like she mattered. When he’d held her hand and smiled, she’d felt more alive than she’d ever felt until that moment, when the world faded away and left just the two of them behind.
