Summary
Post season 4, Mike Wheeler starts having nightmares. At first, they are undistinguishable, but soon he can see faces in them. Specifically, Will Byers face. Scared of what they mean, he pushes them away from him, until he maybe, just maybe, can pretend that everything is normal between them. That is, until the nightmares come true and Mike must confront what he truly, actually feels for his best friend if they ever want to make it out alive.
Featuring: Jealous Mike Wheeler in denial, forced proximity in the Upside Down, Mike getting Vecna's curse and coming to some realizations (+ Mike & Nancy sibling relationship).
This is my way of coping with pre-Vol.2 Byler doubt, enjoy!

"Yeah," Lucas added, stepping closer, "We’re not mad about what we saw, Will. Honestly. We just want you to be okay."

Misunderstandings grow, jealousy simmers, and buried feelings refuse to stay quiet as the boys figure themselves out.

In the 18 months between the Upside Down cracking Hawkins in two and their disastrous Crawl, Will starts drawing again. It’s a familiar feeling, sitting in the basement with some paper and a box of crayons, an ever-curious Wheeler looking over his shoulder.
Except, it’s not Mike. No, Mike hasn’t been talking to him unless completely necessary, which sucks, but Will’s gotten used to it. No, it’s little Holly, just as sweet as Will remembers and totally captivated with his art.
It’s refreshing, at least, to have someone look at him with stars in their eyes for once. He just hopes Mike doesn’t find out; it’ll give him another thing to be weird about.
TLDR: Five times Will teaches Holly how to draw, and one time it’s Mike who takes his lessons to heart.

“Mike, are you serious right now?”
“I’m dead serious. I want to say I’ll be accepting, but the truth is, I can't watch you be in love with someone else and pretend like everything’s okay.”
His words hit Will hard enough that he had to brace himself against the railing. It felt like they were having two separate conversations, and he couldn’t keep up with either one.
Mike took a deep, fortifying breath. “The truth is, I just want you, Will.”
“But… I don’t…”
“I know. I know you don’t. I know there’s someone else. Believe me, it’d be easier if I didn’t feel this way, but I can’t help it.”
“Mike, what the hell are you even… you love El.”
Mike blinked. “Of course I love El. I’ll always love her. That doesn’t just disappear. But we broke up. For real. And what we had was… it was kid stuff. First love. Easy. Safe.”
Will’s breath felt trapped in his lungs.
“When I think about you,” Mike said quietly, “it hurts. In this way that doesn’t feel safe at all. And that’s how I know it’s real.”Or, Rockin' Robin intervenes and forces the boys to finally talk about their feelings.

Mike Wheeler has a problem. That problem, unfortunately, has several smaller problems within it, consisting of spring break, a very unexpected road trip, and Will Byers.
The first and last of those two things are as planned as they could possibly be. The second is not in any way whatsoever and throws a wrench into the position of the third due to the simple, though not entirely unwelcome, nature of an increasingly relevant problem: Mike Wheeler kind of (maybe and sort of definitely) likes Will Byers—and, all things considered, maybe it’s less likes and more is falling in love with, but that’s just another part of this predicament that Mike Doesn’t Really Want to Think About, of which there is a growing list.
