He couldn’t believe he fucking did that. He’d kissed Nines on nothing but a whim.
Some of the numbness began to crack, and he closed his eyes before dragging a hand out to press against his face.
What was going to happen now, he wondered. His actions would qualify as assault, if Nines pressed the issue, which Gavin predicted he would. What false hope he’d built in the moment was now rubble and broken scaffolding that tumbled out of him with each step forward.
There was no nothing between them. Nines had saved his sorry ass out of obligation.

Jake was watching out of annoyed curiosity, and nothing else. It didn't matter that he had noticed the way Piers closed his one good eye as he shifted his weight back, lips parted in an exhale that was probably meant to center him. Or the way Nivans' dog tags dragged on the mats whenever he moved to readjust the pose, the exposed nape of his neck most likely dappled with sweat and making the chain catch against his hair.
Nah, Jake hadn't been watching because of that.

There wasn’t a whole lot she could see given she’d ceased her advancement, body frozen and breath lodged in her windpipe. Yun-Jin’s first thought was a robbery or a break-in but that would’ve meant that they'd gotten by the penthouse building security, and she could only think of one other person who had the latest codes to her level.
