When he wakes, in the dark of the cave, tattered remains of clothes pressed against his skin, it's not the voice of Julia Pennyworth welcoming him back in the sterile lights of a hospital bed, taking him back to Wayne Manor instead his voice anxiously reaches him as he is shaken with more and more force into life. His eyelids feel heavy, like the rest of his body does, as if the darkness around him is unable-- or unwilling--- to let go.

He’s eight years old and he screams for his favourite person, meeting his eyes for a moment, and he is scared and he would have seen that Alfred was too, if not for the shot ringing on the street.
If not for Bruce being too shocked at seeing him fall, the body hitting the ground dry, not like he did when he faked being shot by Bruce. dramatic and prolongated.
He fell like a duck being shot from the sky, one moment you see it flying, above and swift and then-

The day Jeremiah shows him the generator, he had taken the vial of liquid for council from Lucius on its safe-keeping, knowing after the Ivy incident the man would have some ideas.
Bruce's little detour after Jerome´s final event might complicate things.

Summary
Steve hasn’t been back to the Upside Down since. It isn’t like he’s actively avoiding it, or at least that’s what he tries to say to himself. The truth is that all it took was one look at the millisecond of fear that passed on Eddie’s face whenever it gets mentioned and Steve knew he was going to do everything to keep himself out of the Upside Down.
Which made it easier to stay Rightside Up.
He stays.
With his ghost.
Or at least he does until a Demogorgon is running out past the barn, straight into a gate that could maybe take them to where Holly Wheeler is.

Santa Clause isn't real.
The North Pole doesn't look like it does on the TV specials, and if it did, elves would be short, jolly beings covered head to toe in themed outfits.
(Except Santa is real and the North Pole does look pretty magical. Steve knows, because Steve's last name might be Harrington, but his mother's last name is Clause--and just because she rejected her roots doesn't mean he does.)
