The next morning, Hikaru discovered two things.
One: Willowshore woke up early.
Two: the town was loud.
Not city loud. No taxis or yelling. But dogs—everywhere. Barking, yipping, panting little beasts with tails wagging like they were all on a sugar high.
Hikaru stood at the edge of his porch, mug in hand, sleep still clinging to his eyes. The road in front of his cottage curved like a smile, lined with flower boxes and picket fences. Five men walked down it, spaced out but moving in the same direction.
And every single one had a dog.
