His sword hangs heavy by his side. His hand moves to grip its hilt. He opens his mouth, maybe to say “I'm sorry, Cleo,” or “I'm also the Boogeyman,” or “Can I stay, even after all this? Will you let me?”
What comes out instead is “You’re a good ally, Cleo. Thanks for that,” because he's a coward who can't take the chances he's been given, and he always has been one.bigb doesn't kill cleo. this is the fallout.

Scott falls. Martyn gains thirty minutes, but he barely notices it in the thrill of adrenaline and murder. Nah, I don’t want to play this silly game, and Impulse panics. I wanna do it this way. I wanna do it exactly this way, and Martyn yanks his sword out of Scott’s limp, melting body and strides towards Impulse. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Mean Gill or a Bad Boy or a Neighbour or a Clocker, and Martyn’s snarling with teeth that are just a little too sharp, blood dripping from his sword and his hands. Impulse looks terrified, not even thinking to pull out a weapon as he scrambles away from Martyn.

Summary
The blood moon rises over Scott's castle. Chickens cease their endless clucking, hopping onto perches to sleep and hope they aren't the next ones taken. Cow bones lie abandoned along the courtyard, discarded along with the bloodless husks of their owners. Bats flutter away into the woods in search of insects to eat. All the living things in the old Goldsmith Castle are there by force.
Apo is a dead thing in the dark dreaming she's alive, and has nothing in common with them.
She has a lot in common with Pyro, though. At the beginning, back before she made a devil's deal, they'd bonded over finding Truffle. That had been a beautiful time, a time when Apo had begun to think this might not be so bad. A time when her biggest problem was that her supposedly abandoned outpost would have tourists in it who wouldn’t shut the fuck up about vampires and Bigfoot, and she could send letters to Cherri without lying. A time when she could stand to send letters to Cherri at all.
