He holds onto everything of use: an extra head gasket for his ‘74 Ford, an adjustable-jaw wrench rusted stuck at ⅜”, huge floppy fold-out maps of National Parks and rivers and interstates that blanket his passenger seat. He watches out for himself, one eye always open, a prickling wariness at home in his spine.
