Summary
Directionless after flaming out of grad school, drinking herself to death alone in a squalid apartment, obsessed with someone who died almost a decade ago, 27-year-old Shauna Shipman is long past the point of hoping her life will get better. It doesn't help that one of her only friends, who she hasn't even seen in months, just dove headfirst off a hotel balcony. Apparently Lottie claimed she'd be "coming back soon"—but if there's one thing Shauna knows for sure, it's that dead people stay dead. Lottie's as gone as Jackie is, as gone as the rest of them, and she won't be coming back, not soon, not ever. Obviously.
Asleep on the floor of the cabin as the first snow started to fall, Lottie made a bargain with the wilderness. Years later, confined in the mountains of Switzerland, months of isolation and electroshock unearthed something in her mind - not a figment of her imagination, but not quite a memory either. She's pretty sure she knows what happens next.

“If you like,” Frankie says carefully, “I could reach out to her. But if Annie is hiding something, I’m confident that she has a good reason.”
Britta nods, determined. “I think we should tread lightly. I can handle that.” Once again, Frankie seems pleased by Britta’s answer, and, once again, Britta gets a rush of satisfaction.
“I think that would be best,” Frankie says. “I truly am sorry that I have a lot of work to do, and don’t have more time for catching up. It’s been a pleasure seeing you, Britta. I do hope you’ll be back soon.” She seems genuinely sorry to be sending her out, and it occurs to Britta that Frankie might actually be lonely.
“Good seeing you, Frankie,” Britta says. Then she thinks about the way Frankie said the word pleasure. When she’s out in the parking lot, she catches herself trying the word out on her lips.

Summary
Natalie never expected to die a hero. She expected to die alone, coked out in the back of some shitty van, a victim to herself and her fucking impulses. Or, she expected to die in fear, victim to a hunt or a sacrifice to some stupid Wilderness God she doesn’t believe in. So, in some ways, maybe this is a plus:
Yay me, I guess. At least they can put ‘she tried’ on my gravestone.
But this doesn’t feel like a victory. All it feels like is cold. A cold, lonely death, buried in the snow and completely, entirely alone. A useless death. A death that no one will remember.
This is how she dies - not with a bang, but with a whimper.
And then she wakes up.
OR: Natalie never makes it to the mountain. A sudden blizzard claims her first. But when she opens her eyes, she's back to the day of the crash. This time, she’s determined to keep everyone alive - even if The Wilderness has other plans.
