“Jordan?” I asked, my voice cracking. Was I really about to do this? Was I about to carry out the conversation I’d planned in my head for a year, telling myself I was waiting for the right moment but deep inside wishing it would never come? The simple words I prepared had the power to resurrect the special relationship Jordan and I had shared, or instantaneously eliminate any possible remains of it.
“Yeah, Sage?” she replied, concerned and cautious. If she had even an inkling of what was to come, she didn’t show it.

This is a single-scene short story involving a heart-to-heart exchange between two high school seniors, Sage and Jordan, as they attempt to answer lingering questions about their history. Taking place at dusk underneath a streetlight outside of Sage's home, the conversation leads the girls to reveal their true feelings regarding their descent from best friends to strangers the year prior.

Summary
Charlie lingers in the locker room long after all the other boys have left, almost as if he doesn’t want any of them to see where he’s going, and that more than anything convinces Nick that he’s got to do something to find out what’s wrong. So when Nick leaves the locker room, he turns a corner and then hovers there, waiting to see which direction Charlie goes.
He’s not sure what he’s expecting—maybe that Charlie’s sneaking off to see Ben again? But Charlie doesn’t meet up with Ben. He doesn’t meet up with anyone. Instead, he ducks into a broom cupboard and emerges five minutes later in pajamas with a rucksack slung over his shoulders and what looks like a sleeping bag tucked under his arm.
Nick comes out from around the corner. “Charlie? What are you doing?”

A closeted Charlie comes out to his parents after Ben assaults him. When his mum kicks him out of the house, Nick and Sarah take him in instead.

“Surprise me.”
“The truth is – you don’t get over it,” Sam says, his voice low. “Not when it’s that close to your soul. Not when he’s someone you built yourself up around. Maybe you fall in love again, maybe you don’t. It won’t feel the same. He’ll always be coming up in your peripheral.” As the bus pulls to a stop in front of them, Sam grips his shoulder. “But you still gotta keep living your life. For his memory, yeah. But mostly for yourself.”
