If Maglor didn’t want to monitor the children, Maedhros thinks irritably, he should have said so earlier, before they had been put down for the night. He starts towards the door.
“Listen,” Maglor urges, stepping into his path.
Maedhros humors him. He can hear nothing but crickets and the boys talking to each other in a way that suggests they cannot hear the argument occurring. They probably can’t. Even to Maedhros, they’re unintelligible unless he makes an effort to listen, which he never does. The children are on the mend; Maedhros knows that. Yet he had expected Maglor to succor them longer. That he has unilaterally deemed them well makes Maedhros feel exposed. Cheated. Like all his soft parts are on display.
Maglor has not yet put his hair back up. It falls over his shoulders in a black river as he says, “Come to bed.”
