Six months ago, V's boss at Arasaka ordered her to assassinate his rival. Instead, with the reluctant but invaluable help of her old friend Jackie Welles, she pushed them both off their thrones and claimed one for herself. “The world.” Johnny repeated the phrase slowly. She tasted his revulsion on her tongue. “This world?” he asked. He gestured at the trash-strewn alleyway. The dog had finished its meal and had settled to sleep in a blanket likely left there before by a homeless person. “This is your brave new world?”
“No, Johnny,” she said, her voice echoing the revulsion he'd forced her to feel. “These are just the rats that got caught.”

She'd been in raging storms and shootouts, motorcycle races and fist-fights. But no amount of time on the road could've prepared her for the vast loneliness of Night City; the place where dreams went to die.
V had lost everything. Her clan, her family, her child. Night City offered a chance to run from it all, a chance to hide from the hounds that plauged her.

Because the Herculean burden of being human can’t be satisfied with being anything but the most heart-wrenching experience of your life. It demands empathy without any reward, forgiveness without any justice. Being human requires you to chug along and drive onwards, even when everything you are is screaming to stay behind. Being human means not only being able to accept change, but not fearing it, either.
And “human” is something Johnny Silverhand is decidedly not. Not in a straightforward sense, at least.
But if V can’t accept change, what does that make her?
