“I try not to ask for too much,” Chan says, taking the chopsticks gingerly from her hand. “It’s so rare for me to be selfish.”
He takes another rice cake. Another. One more before he’s lifting one to her mouth, scrunching his nose in a silent command to open up. She doesn’t realize how obedient she is until she tastes the sweet heat of the sauce.
Chan smiles. Only one dimple showing. He watches her chew, swallow. His thumb swipes at the corner of her mouth. Sucks on the pad of his finger.
She can only stare at him, her pulse throbbing in her throat, between her legs. He takes the bowl from her. Sets it neatly in the sink. Traps her between his arms when he puts his hands on the counter behind her.
“For once in my life, I want to be selfish,” he whispers. And he’s close. So close. His breath hot on her lips, the tip of his nose bumping against the bridge of hers. “Don’t you?”

I sat up straight in bed with a gasp so sharp it hurt.
I was ripped out of sleep with a force that left me quaking in fear for half a second.
My heart was racing, adrenaline buzzing through my body and I fought the urge to scramble out of the bed. I brought my knees up, ready to kick at whatever had woken me up.
As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I saw a figure standing barely 3 feet away just to the right of my bed. I lifted my gaze to see who it was, but they were just a black silhouette that didn't move. I could make out a head of loose short curls, broad shoulders and pale skin.
I don't know why I didn't scream.
