She’d never have admitted it to anyone else. So whenever someone asked, she would just fake a conspiratorial glance over each shoulder and say, sickly-sweet and false, “Well, a girl, of course. My own little mini-me.” But as soon as she was alone, she’d lay a hand over her stomach and pray to a god she never believed in.
And then the nurse handed her the baby, swaddled in that god-awful, damning pink, and exclaimed, “You have a baby girl!”
Mary fought the grimace off her face, smiling down at her daughter, and leaned in to kiss her forehead. “Oh, my girl,” she whispered, so soft no one else could hear. “My poor girl. I love you so much. I’m so sorry.”
