Summary
“I will not be your prisoner again.”
“You never were,” Daniil grunts. It’s quiet a moment, and then he says, “Or you weren’t meant to be.”
“Then what was I?” This has been the question plaguing him, the reason he wakes from dreams of Daniil nauseous and unsettled. “What am I?”
Daniil draws back, the wound covered. He wipes at his mouth with his bare wrist as if to keep the words inside. “You’re alive. You’re… perfect. Or as close as I could get it.”
Artemy has nothing to say to that. The Scientist creates his dream, The Creature reckons with his existence, and The Spirit haunts the narrative.

Summary
“You take such good care of your town,” Daniil sighs, lifting Artemy’s fingers to his lips. “You’ll bleed for it, you’ll spill blood for it. You’ll give everything you have—everything you are—to take care of it.” He looks up from Artemy’s hands, his eyes sharp. Demanding. “But who takes care of you?”
Artemy can’t speak. His bones are loosening under Daniil’s touch, his stomach dropping inside him even as heat pools in his cheeks, in his chest. Something dark and sweet has begun to uncoil in his belly.
“Answer me,” says Daniil. Every word is enunciated carefully, every syllable plucking sweet sharpness in Artemy’s gut. “Who takes care of you?”

Summary
Following a year of imprisonment and his escape at Artemy Burakh’s hands, Daniil Dankovsky has spent two months hidden safely in Artemy’s home. Despite a challenging history and a mixed reputation, it might soon be safe for Daniil to step outside. To resume some form of (marginally) public life, it seems a logical first step to start with a few trusted acquaintances.
…A dinner party with all of them may not have been the best idea.

Summary
Daniil has purpose now, and that can be enough. He can make it be. He’d lived on the dregs of nothing but self assignment and discipline for years and he’d gotten by, had gone as far as town on Gorkhon on the half life of his own ambitions. Daniil knows he can grasp a field of study with both hands, knows that despite all that has occurred in the dark and wrinkled skein of the year behind him—there is this. Purpose.
His old life restored, in a fashion, though decidedly less fashionable. Daniil finds he hardly minds. And after all of it, after each and every day of purpose, he’ll have a warm bed to return to and a beloved body to lie alongside.
Or: After a fraught and roundabout journey back to one another, Daniil and Artemy take their first steps into a shared future.

Summary
I'm cornered. I'll never be able to look the people I've failed to protect in the eye. My allies will end up in prison or exile, my research... in fire.
When the plague was cured, the Polyhedron destroyed, and the Haruspex victorious, Daniil Dankovsky did not remain in the town on the Gorkhon. Instead, wise to his presence and determined for retribution, the Inquisitor and the Army brought him back to the capital to be tried for his research—for crimes against natural reality, and therefore against the Powers That Be. After a year in prison, he has at last been sentenced to death... and there is only so long one man can fight against fate before he finally submits to the inevitable.
Artemy Burakh has no intention of letting that happen.

Summary
“… I’d say good morning,” Dankovsky said at length, a little hoarsely, “but I’m afraid I’ve lost track of the time. Good … something, Haruspex.”
“Afternoon. You look—” Artemy began, and broke off.
“Yes? What ghoulish thing do I resemble today?” Daniil blew out some smoke, staring pensively ahead. “A striga, perhaps.”
“—better,” Artemy finished. “Less like you’d gone already, and are only haunting me.”
That shut Daniil’s mouth.
[Or: a rendezvous with danger, one very cold winter.]

Summary
For as long as he was able, Daniil Dankovsky has kept his past—and his body—to himself. Even as he studied up on the latest advancements in surgery and the potential they might hold to bring his body and mind into closer alignment, he never pursued them for himself. Instead, he binds his chest and hides beneath layers of clothing for fear that any exposure of his secret might have dire consequences for his life and his future.
But on the other side of insurmountable loss, there is Artemy Burakh—the first surgeon he might dare to trust with the truth of himself.

Summary
“I wanted to see how you’re doing. I know this—being here wasn’t your first choice.”
“No,” says Daniil. It’s hardly an admission. “But few of us have had our first choice these days, have we? In adversis, necesse est accommodare.” Never mind that he’s not adapting especially well at all, that Artemy has seen the proof for himself. “If you’re feeling responsible for me, I’d rather you save it for someone better suited for your protection.”
At that, Artemy looks up, and straight into Daniil’s eyes.
This close, in the light of the gas lamps, they are an unfathomable color and depth: light and simultaneously shadowed, somewhere between blue and green and gray, like staring into a clear lake that stretches deeper than the eye can make out. Daniil stares into those depths and finds himself straining forward, leaning, as if he could tip into that body of water and lose himself beneath the surface.
“No,” Artemy says at last, his voice low enough to stoke that heat in Daniil’s gut again. “I invited you here because I think you’re the only person in town I’m not responsible for."

Summary
“What about your dad?” Biggs asks, and he’s still doing that thing he does sometimes where he’s looking all calm and serious and concerned at Luke, like Luke’s some damsel he can sweet-talk into his bed or round the back of the cantina or something.
“Just wanted to know more about him is all,” Luke lies with a shrug, taking another gulp of his drink. “Cause it’s my birthday.”
“Do you mean Ben hasn’t told you about your dad before?” Camie asks, sounding kind. “Like, ever?”
“I mean, I know some things,” Luke says, sitting up straight and defensive with a glare at his friend. "He talked about him sometimes, you know."
or, after Mustafar, Obi-Wan finds himself singed and shattered and once more on Tatooine. When it's time to give the babe up to his aunt and uncle, he also finds that he cannot. Not Anakin's son. Not another Skywalker. The only thing left to do is raise him as his own.
