Instead, she checks in with her teacher, grabbing the reins of the horse she’s been assigned for the day, the warm feeling of Joel’s eyes on her the whole time.
The last thing she sees as she mounts her horse and follows her teachers and classmates beyond the gates is Joel’s smile falling into concern.

On the road, he and Ellie hadn’t exactly stopped to observe major holidays, the passage of time marked only by changes in the weather. Celebrations had stopped long before he’d made it to Boston, and he doubted that the FEDRA schools would make any efforts to acknowledge something as frivolous as Christmas or Easter.
He’d felt guilty then, and a little sad. He’d never asked Ellie about her parents.
