    Summary

Pete is a lot of things. Ray loves all of them, even the difficult ones, the ones that left Pete sliced up tip to toe with a hundred stitches itching. Pete is a lot of things—but mostly, he's from Georgia.

Currently, Pete is wearing two jackets and trying to stuff his fingers down Ray's pants.

“He tips his head to the side and puts his nose against Pete's ear, kisses the lobe then sticks his tongue inside, licks Pete's earwax just because he wants to. It's nasty. It's not good.

    Ray does it again.”

    Summary

“You know,” Missus Garraty says, “he walked late. I was so worried, but William — his daddy — he told me not to. Ray would do it when he was ready. And then one day, he just pushed himself up and walked right over to me. His first steps, towards me.” She sighs, rickety and nervous. “When he learned to walk again, his first steps were towards you.”

That much is true. Pete, standing at the end of a railing with his hands held out. Ray, clutching that same railing for dear life and whimpering with every step until he could grab onto Pete and collapse against his chest. They sunk to the floor together, Ray fighting tears and Pete shushing him softly, until the nurses brought over a wheelchair.

“Is this where you tell me it’s better I leave?” he asks. “And warn me to stay away from him?”

Months after the walk, months of recovery, and Pete grabs the mail while Ray makes lunch. Things spiral from there.

    Summary

    “I’m making you dinner. We’re gonna have a d-d-date.”

Pete’s eyebrows lift in interest. No, in surprise. “A date?”

Pride swells in Ray’s chest. Pete’s not easily surprised. Sometimes it feels like he’s ten steps ahead of Ray, not just in recovery but in life, like he’s got in all figured out and he’s just waiting for Ray to catch up.

    “A date,” he confirms.

“Well,” Pete says, hushed and reverent, “I’ve never been on one of those before.”

Months after the Walk, months of recovery, and Ray makes Pete dinner. Things spiral from there.

    Summary

    “Ray, baby, wait—“

“Stop!” Ray screams, so loud his voice cracks. “God, f-fucking stop it with the ‘baby’ crap! You know, you m-m-made me — you made me think — I thought we were O-O-Orpheus and Eurydice, walking out of hell, you know?”

“Ray,” Pete says helplessly. “I don’t know what that means.”

His big, dumb cow eyes are mean with tears. “The poet,” he shoves Pete in the chest, “and the f-f-fucking corpse.”

Months after the Walk, months of recovery, and Ray brings Pete breakfast in bed. Things spiral from there.

    Summary

“And the Major?” Mom asks stiffly.

“Asked me how my wish was treatin’ me,” Pete whispers. “Asked me if I regretted it.”

Ray still wants the Major dead. Maybe even more than he used to. Ray would kill him with his bare hands if he could — but they’re too clumsy and his grip is too loose to do any real damage. That’s what the Major means, asking Pete if he regrets saving Ray. Do you still like your toy, now that it’s broken? Don’t you wish you’d left it on the ground with the strings cut?

    “. . . and?”

When Pete smiles at him, it’s like the sun coming out. “Only regret is I didn’t kiss you sooner.”

Months after the Walk, months of recovery, and Ray makes dessert to celebrate Pete coming home. Things spiral from there.
