“He just,” Sasha took a shaky breath, and Anne felt Sasha’s wet tears pressed into her dress. “Pulled me aside, saying he didn’t think it was working out. He wanted to go to the dance with– with Amy,” she said the name with disdain, “instead of me, and he just– took her hand and l-left me there!”
Anne slowly wrapped her arms around her. “It’s okay,” she said. “I’m here.”
Sasha sighed into her shoulder, and Anne could feel her breath on her arm. “Thanks, Anne,” she said, pulling her tighter.
And Anne felt– well. Sasha was crying, so Anne felt horrible, but she felt– relief? Her chest was lighter, Sasha’s arms around hers singed like lightning. But she was happy. Her best friend was crying and she felt like she had lifted that boulder off of her chest. Because she–
