He’s just that guy I was in love with at sixteen, she wanted to say but it didn’t explain why she had felt confident putting her life and the future of the galaxy on his hands.
“He makes you want to root for him, doesn’t he?” she asked instead.
She didn’t love him but there was something about him that made her want to give. It was embarrassing that her younger self had been better at resisting the impulse but she had, after all, lost fewer people.
“It often pays off. I could have saved myself half of my professional failures if I had been rooting for him from the start.”
