Chapter Text

“Alright passengers, we have arrived at our destination” the pilot said through the speakers. Finally, she landed. She gets her carry-on and pushes through the line to get off the plane as fast as possible. With the loud annoying murmurs of the crowds of people, she rushes to get her luggage and gets to the terminal. Finally at the exit, she impatiently looks around for her parents.

Where are they? I told them the right terminal. They should be-

“Sun! Sweetie! Over here!” her mother and father say while running to her. They both immediately smother her in one big hug.

“Mom. Dad!” Sun yells with a hug of her own. Finally, After a full school year plus summer school, Sun has finally returned from America. She was back home..

“Oh my god. I can’t believe it! Look at how much you have grown. My little girl is so beautiful” her mom cries as she keeps hold of Sun.

“Mom, it's only been a year. I haven’t changed that much” Sun rolls her eyes while squirming out of the hug.

“Ahhh c’mon. Let her be Sun. She hasn't seen you in so long.” Her dad says while he pats her back.

“I know I know, but I’m so tired! I’ve been on that plane for hours. Can we just celebrate at home?”

“Alright sweeties. Let's get to the car. Dear. Please pick up her bags.”. Sun’s dad does what he is told and all three go to the car.

While on the drive home, her parents try to talk with her and find out everything she did in America. “How was the school?” “Did you make any friends?” “What did you do there?” “Did you date anyone?”, amongst other questions of a similar nature. At this moment, Sun regrets not calling them more. Maybe then the car trip would have been a bit more peaceful. She gave them the typical “everything was fine. I had a lot of fun” lie to keep them happy. They bought it, which was good. One less problem for Sun to be anxious about.

“- No?... Of course not. You say you love and care about me but… YOU DON’T LOVE ME!”

…There was only one problem that matters to her right now. To fix what she had broken and ran from. All of her time in America was an attempt to not think about what she did. She made new friends, did some volunteer work, and even went on a couple of dates. It helped, but it wasn’t enough. Any time she was left alone with her thoughts, they were filled with her regrets. But that was the past. She was back home and once school started, she was going to have to face everything head on…she was hoping it came quickly.

And quickly it does come. The first day of school has arrived. Sun gets up bright and early to look her best. Her bag was ready, her uniform was spotless, and Sunny was well gassed and ready to go. Sun eats with her parents quickly before hopping on her good old bike that she missed so much and hits the gas pedal full speed ahead. Despite being gone for so long, her muscle memory immediately kicks in. She drives and goes by the road where she first met Ongsa. A small part of her was hopeful she was there, but alas she wasn’t. Sun recovers from this little and detour speeds her way to school, getting there rather quickly. She locks up Sunny at the front and looks at her school. Nothing much has changed, but it’s still nice to see it again.

She starts to walk around, looking for any trace of her old friends. She could guess Alpha and Luna were in college by now, but there was still Tinh, Charoen, Aylin, and even Ton. She misses them too and wants to catch up. Her prayers seem to have been heard and answered. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees the two friends who have stuck together since middle school.

“Charoen! Tinh! Over here!” Sun cries out too. They look around to find the voice before their eyes settle on the Sun. It didn’t take long till Charoen waves back and comes running to her.

“Sun! Oh my god you are back!” Charoen cheers and gives the girl a hug.

“Sun, you’re back.” Tinh says with less enthusiasm as he trails closer. “How was the US?” he ask.

“Oh it was… alright. I’ll tell you all about it later but if you don’t mind… Can you tell me where Ongsa is?” she asked. The both of them tense up and look at each other. Sun has a guess what's going on. “Look guys… I guess you know what happened between me and Ongsa. I… I don’t know how much she got hurt, but I want to talk to her. It won’t be bad, I swear. I just want to patch things up” Sun asks.

“Yeah…that's not what we are worried about.” Tinh answers matter of factly.

“Oh? Then what is it”

“It’s Ongsa… she *ouch*” Charoen pinches her friend's arm to stop him.

“Tinh.” Charoen scolds her friend.

“She is gonna find out anyway. “ Tinh responds.

“Yeah but it’s not our place to tell-?” Charoen repeats.

“Do you want her to see it?” Sun was losing her patients. Instead of an answer, these two were giving her a mystery.

“If you guys don’t want to tell me whatever you two are talking about, then point me in the direction of Ongsa so I can see it for myself.” Sun chastises them. They look to each other again, as if an argument was going on through their eyes. While Charoen doesn't back down, Tinh rolls his eyes and prematurely takes victory.

“She’s at the court, relaxing in the bleachers.” Tinh says and Charoen is ready to smack him.

“Thanks Tinh. I’ll see you guys at lunch, yeah?”

“Ohhhhh we’ll definitely be seeing you. Later Sun” They two wave Sun goodbye as she runs off around to the back of the school. She could barely wait. The girl she was missing all this time was within her grasp.

I’m surprised she isn’t tagging along with Tinh and Charoen. What’s she doing at the bleachers?... Ehhhh. She’s probably taking a nap there , Sun thinks to herself. Finally at her destination, she looks high and low and quickly finds Ongsa…and her jaw instantly drops.

Ongsa is awake, and she looks good. Better than good, actually. It’s clear that she has been working on her looks. She was way more fit and her face looks flawless. She exuded an air of confidence that the jittery, anxious girl Sun knew before never did. Everything surrounding Ongsa was completely different, including who surrounded the girl.

Which was girls… a lot of girls.

All of them pretty, to Sun’s annoyance. They were definitely not in the same year as them. Most looked to be about a year or two younger than her. All of them surrounding Ongsa, talking to her, laughing, and blushing. Ongsa seems to be relishing in the attention, casually touching the other girls and going along with their whims. Although this irritated the Sun, it wasn’t the absolute worst. Maybe she just got popular. It didn’t mean anything... Until…

As Sun was unconsciously getting closer to the bleachers, a girl comes up to them, blushing and looking to the ground. She seems to be struggling to speak, but eventually gets out what she wants to say. Sun couldn’t make it out, but Ongsa pulls the girl towards her and kisses her on the lips, to Sun’s horror. Her friends around her cheer, and after Ongsa and the girl exchange a few words, she starts talking to her friends.

“Wow on the first day. Some girls are bold.”

“Yeah. Gave me her number and everything”

“Are you gonna give her a call?”

“Probably. I mean she is cute enough, but I really hope she isn’t one of those who want anything serious” Ongsa rolls her eyes.

“Oh c’mon. Those are rare. Most girls who come up to you know what you’re about.”

“Yeah but still..  It’s gonna be a headache if she doesn’t”

They continue to talk while Sun clenches her fist, hating every second of the sight and sounds that laid before her. She tries to stay strong, allowing only a few tears to dirty her face, but she couldn’t keep strong for long. Her body was frozen in place, her legs refusing to move and get away from this horror. As much as Sun thought it couldn’t get worse, fate seemed to hate her.

Ongsa whispers something to all of them and they all get up. Sun looks around and sees everyone is leaving. The bell must have rung. She goes back to looking at Ongsa, who spots her as well. Their eyes made contact for what felt like an eternity. Ongsa was the first to look away, a change in her eyes took over for less than a second before going back to the group that adored her. The group leaves for their classes, and Ongsa doesn’t give Sun another look.

Sun on the other hand, feels like she is getting stabbed in the gut. She fell to the ground and her tears started flowing like a waterfall. Murmurs around her started to form, and Sun quickly notices that there is a crowd forming around her. She runs aways, trying to clean her face as she goes. She doesn’t even want to go to class anymore. She just wants to hide and rot away. But she couldn’t. Despite everything she just saw, her mind still wants to know… what happened to Ongsa?
