A rustling sound startles him: it might be a hungry animal or a half rotten zombie or, or--
Or a small child, who leaps out from the underbrush with silent, alleycat agility. She has pigtails under her stained baseball cap and her amber eyes glow in the moonlight. “He-hello?” His voice slurs with his shivering.
Christ, she’s small. He’s never seen a kid so young surviving on their own. “My name’s Tommy.”
She pauses, eyes narrowing. At last she breathes, “mine’s Clementine.”
