The combat drone given to engineer Evangeline Shepard is a sophisticated piece of equipment, and there aren't a lot of safeguards isolating it from other systems in Shepard's omni-tool or within Normandy's servers. First it starts interfacing with Legion, then it accesses her translator apps.
When Shepard's combat drone starts on the same journey the geth took centuries ago and EDI took just a couple of years previously, Evangeline Shepard decides to run an experiment . . . and help it instead of immediately defaulting to a preemptive strike.
ME2/ME3 continuity, mixed media poetry, prose, dialogue, and experimental technique, with multiple POVs. Different universe from my Disaster Zone/Sometimes Grace stories, and the Shepard/Garrus and Joker/EDI pairings are relevant but also background and tangential.

“J-Joker,” she manages, panting from the effort.
“Thank fuck. Dammit, thank fuck.”There’s a shuffling sound, the rustle of fabric and a long, deep groan of pain. Then, warmth, blessed warmth exploding over her skin. It takes a moment for her fried nerves to identify the source of the holy feeling. Joker wrapped his hand around her right wrist, one of the only parts of her body that isn’t constantly screaming at her to take a bullet to the head and end the torture.
“Wassup,” she chokes out.
A hysterical chuckle escapes from Joker’s mouth, right next to her face. She can feel his warm breath on her bruised cheek, and the feeling settles something wild inside of her.
“What’s up, she asks, buried underneath forty tons of snow and concrete.”

Something kept the whole truth back in her throat. Embarrassment, maybe? Stubbornness? Kaidan suffered far worse than this, surely. He wouldn’t want to hear her whining. Or might be annoyed by it. ‘Not feeling too good’ was enough of the truth, wasn’t it? It certainly wasn’t a lie.
It was silent on the other end of the comm. She could hear the dead air, meaning it was still activated. She thought she could even hear him breathe. But straining to hear just hurt her eyes more somehow and she swallowed another whimper. Kaidan took his own breath.
“Well, I have water, and some dinner here for you, if you want. I can bring it in for you?”

This is a (some could say partially, others could say fully) darker interpretation of the canon romance, though it does stick to canon, many scenes are expanded upon (a few are rewritten either because they don't seem right in canon, or I needed to find a way to fit them) and new ones are made to fully make this story. Characterization of Thane on the other hand, that's ambiguous if you want to consider it canon compliant. Personally I do.
