Christmas last year, everything was wonderful. Barty, Evan and Regulus were laughing, decorating their house for the party that Regulus was hosting on Christmas Eve.
The next day, Evan announced his feelings for Barty and everything was ruined. No more Barty, no more friends and basically no more Christmas. Evan's once amazing life would become broken and consistent.
The next year, Dorcas arrives to Evan's ruined flat and informs him that he is invited to Regulus' Christmas party. After a lot of convincing and getting him ready, Evan agrees to go, finally seeing his friends and Barty again.

He fumbled the receiver up to his ear. “Uh—WZLY, you’re on the air,” he said, hoping he didn’t sound as startled as he felt.
“Finally,” said a voice. A boy’s voice, quick and alive, like it didn’t belong anywhere near 1:23 in the morning. “Do you know how long I’ve been trying to get through?”
