The World Nobles had chosen your home to be the location of something called the Native Hunting Competition, and it meant everyone you knew and loved would die for their entertainment.
So you did the only thing you could to survive, and turned into your Zoan appearance in hopes that you would manage to hide until the end.
If said Zoan appearance had not been made a special prize of the tournament catching the eye of a Noble called Garling Figarland, maybe you would have succeeded.

Or a god and goddess au, where different one piece characters used to be gods and slowly remember their past life as they gain more power or interact with others that already remember.
Or or Luffy is not a reborn god but is more of a Cryptid then any of the other other reborn gods so no is really sure what he is (expect for Shanks but he wont tell anyone because he thinks that is is funny) and refuse to believe that he is human -

A sliver of warm light escaped from beneath the door, and more importantly, a faint voice drifted out-something extremely rare. It wasn't a monologue, nor the formal tone of a video conference. It was... a low, carefully modulated voice, carrying a warmth that was hard to describe (or at least, significantly less cold than usual).
Shanks froze. His ears perked up like radar dishes. He crept closer to the door, straining to hear.
"...Yes, I understand. Flight next Tuesday? ...Alright, I'll make arrangements. Don't worry." Shammy's voice was as steady as ever, but his words seemed to come a little slower than usual, and there was a faint, almost imperceptible softness at the end. "...Make sure you rest too. You need to manage your workload."
Shanks's eyes went wide, his forgotten towel dangling from his hand. Shammy was on the phone? Not a work call! A work call would have been "Acknowledged. Will follow up," not "Alright, I'll make arrangements" and "Make sure you rest"! And that tone... Was the sun rising in the west, or was he so sleep-deprived he was hallucinating?

Even if it’s all a pack of lies, no kid deserves the fate that’s coming from being a look-alike with Roger. Shanks finds his feet moving of their own accord, the whole world narrowing to just this thin, insipid man, beaming from ear to ear as he talks about an auction for a child.
