Regulus was an obedient child, therefore the favourite, and therefore spoiled rotten. He grew into a spoiled, mean-spirited youth with a general distaste for all those around him, a mutual distaste. At last, even his parents disliked his rotten nature and wished to marry him off, so they might be rid of him.
Regulus treats insulting his suitors like a sport – a sport he is quite adept at, and so every prince and princess who comes to see and court him, turns away. All but one - a handsome young man with spikey, wild hair like the prongs of a rake. But as Regulus insults him and dubs him "King Prongs", the King has had enough and proclaims that Regulus shall marry the next beggar man to knock on the Castle Doors.This Fairy Tale was my favourite growing up. Curious, Regulus lifts the knife to his lips, licking remnants of sauce off the flat of the blade. He drags the motion out, all the way to the sharp point, leaving the metallic surface with a flick of his tongue.
It’s a successful experiment. James’ chest rises with his next inhale, throat bobbing as he swallows. Regulus smiles to himself, bringing the knife back to his tongue.
The appearance of a hand on Regulus’ knee under the table, the pressure a bit too firm, distracts him. He turns to his right, where Barty has been deep in conversation with Lily for the last half hour. He’s not looking at Regulus now, but the grip of his fingers, sure to leave an imprint on Regulus’ delicate skin, makes it very clear: he has seen everything.
