Summary
Banchina was in the ground, the villagers charity ran out, and the village Elders were fed up with the loud, liar, pirate's brat. He was barely eight years old and he stole a loaf of bread to feed himself.
A suspicious ship docked in Syrup Village's tiny port and happened to be looking to 'hire' a cabin boy. So he got sold to slavers and not one adult batted an eye at that.
Usopp isn't pretty like some of the other children so he gets the crusts of ship's biscuits on good days. He learns the meaning of being quiet, and useful to avoid cruelty only to learn new meanings to cruelty.
One day much later they sailed to the arctic north blue. A metal fish attacked the ship and Usopp's fortunes change.

After a moment, it seemed like Luffy suddenly understood something, and his expression changed to a mix of knowing and curiosity. "Usopp, what are you not telling us?"
Usopp shifted his gaze from the ship to Luffy. "What do you mean?"
"You're hiding something from us."
"There's nothing to tell." Luffy, please drop it, Usopp thought. This isn't like you.
But Luffy approached Usopp slowly, with his determined gaze that always meant he was ready to defend his Nakama, even if the threat was coming from within.
Whether it was on the battlefield or the deck of the Thousand Sunny, Luffy was not one to easily let go of something, especially when a friend's well-being was at risk.
On the other hand, Merry reappearing in Usopp's life once again complicated things for him.

The screen of the monitor cracked as it came crashing down. She looked to where the boys were and neither of them was there. The laughter stopped but the murmurs multiplied. Chopper’s hand tightened around hers.
“Nami,” he said. “Where’s Usopp?”
No one knows Usopp has been trained to fight. Not his friends. Not his classmates. But when push comes to shove, he steps into the role of the hero he once needed—whether he wants to or not.

Usopp shrugged. “We do things for Luffy. For the captain.” He stared at the sea. “A sniper stays in the shadows. Supports from afar. That’s what Dad taught me.”
Eshe smirked. “Yasopp didn’t plan on you finding people who care.”
Usopp didn’t flinch. “Luffy never counts on dying. And secrets? They’d survive them. They almost did the first time. I’m okay handling it alone. I’m a gunman. That’s what we do.”
He looked to the stars. “I can see those bitches now—”
“It could be nothing,” Eshe warned.
Usopp laughed. It didn’t sound happy. “It could be something.”
He drew Kabuto and turned toward the trees. Eyes sharp. Haki rising. Eshe saw Yasopp in him.
“They’re here,” Usopp said. “It’s something, after all.”
As such, Usopp carries Yasopp’s legacy alone. The crew doesn’t know. They just see Usopp. But the past has teeth, and it’s already chewing on the future.
