Fear gripped Rey as she rushed to her window and looked out onto the downtown Seattle city streets already filled with people heading to the march. Suddenly, a crimson fire ball erupted along the parade route by the Seattle City Hall and Municipal Court buildings. Rey felt the blast slam into her window, rattling the glass, as she stepped back in shock. The fire ball mushroomed in size and morphed into a huge black cloud rising several stories high and more than a city block wide. Craning her neck, she observed glass from less protected windows littering near-by streets.
As she watched the black cloud engulf several streets as it rolled downhill to the Seattle waterfront, activity several docks away from the black cloud caught her eye. Multiple black military looking HUMVEE-like vehicles left the docks and headed up Madison, Marion, and Columbia into the downtown core.

Wangxianficrecs post here. (Archived.)Oh. Oh, hold on. Shit. I'm emotionally exhausted. (Also, it's quite late, but I couldn't stop reading: this is a very fast read.) It's as strange and gut-wrenching as you're thinking, and sooo interesting. POV moves around, but the bulk of the story is wangxian (it doesn't take long for wwx to get called back from the dead). The new reality is stark and grim, and the people who have survived in it (most notably lwj) are changed in fundamental ways from who they were in canon. So the story is about wwx and the core crew (including a delightfully ambiguous nhs) trying to defeat Wen Rouhan (again) while lzc and meng yao debate ethics and try to guess at truths from lzc's captivity in nightless city and jc chokes on the mistakes he's made and tries to breathe.

It was so strange, to travel with Lan Wangji, this new Lan Wangji who not only did not remember him, but had had such different experiences than the Lan Wangji Wei Wuxian knew. He had seen his people slaughtered, had endured seven months of trying to lead and keep things in order while knowing a sword lay at his brother’s throat. He was not quieter than the Lan Wangji Wei Wuxian had known (frankly Wei Wuxian did not see how that would be possible) but there was a flame burning within him that hadn’t been there in the other reality. A thirst for justice and vengeance that seemed to consume all his thoughts.
Wei Wuxian knew what that flame felt like. That flame had kept him warm during three months in the Burial Mounds, while he struggled to survive and tame the resentful energy.

An instant favorite. I'd kill for a.sequel, as there's just so much fascinating material here, I never want to stop reading it.
Whether it's a smutty and hot story or a really sad story about rape is very much a question of perspective. I've read it from both perspectives. It's well-written and powerful either way.

I was honestly surprised by now extremely good this story is. My incorrect assumption was that the story would be going in a very cliché, wooden, forced direction — into a mere plotless smut story. Nope! This rich narrative, with its complex characters, flows so naturally, so soothingly syrupy that you don't realize Reader is in over her head until it's too late. And then, Andy is determined to end the story as her hero, and you want so much to believe him. It's crazy how logical he seems. And it makes so much logical sense the way that Laurie becomes unhinged; the gradual process that shows how seemingly normal behavior can be twisted into this sick obsession. I won't spoil the ending except to say, WOW. I love, love, loved the conclusion.

This is the final one-parter in the author's Halloween 2022 series, and holy cow is it good. It's so mesmerizing that as soon as I finished the story, I immediately scrolled up and reread it to make sure I hadn't missed a single combustible moment. Although it's perfect just exactly as it is, this is definitely one of those stories that leaves me begging for more, please!

This author has a gift for writing scenes that feels so very real, so very natural. Every emotion or action we see from these characters is vivid, tangible, and so rich. The lush nature of the narrative delights me. The author doesn't pull a Tolkien and overly describe everything, but the world as a whole is so well fleshed-out, so colorful, that it really contributes to the feeling of immersion in the protagonist's head.
My only critique is in regards to this weird formatting error with all of the quotation marks that appear in all (I think) of piratechicken's (and only piratechicken's) fics. (I.e., this isn't a formatting error on my screen.) For some reason they look like „ (double commas) instead of " (two apostrophes). But after awhile that's an easy formatting glitch to ignore and filter out from one's reading experience. And it's So worth it. Holy cow, the hotness!
