Summary
Things go south for Zuko when he sides with the Avatar to defend the Moon Spirit, Tui, at the North Pole. He and Iroh become traitors the moment they attack Zhao—a high-ranking officer—during a military invasion, committing high treason. Forced to flee to the Earth Kingdom, Zuko, being a stubborn turtleduck, decides to travel alone. Zhao continues to hunt the traitors, and Zuko soon finds himself captured by the Admiral, who has dark plans for the prince. The only lucky thing is that Zuko was fleeing through the Gaipan forest. Jet, who saves the refugee named 'Lee,' soon finds himself swept up by a new feeling.
----I may have overtagged this, but better safe than sorry. I'll be posting as I refine the chapters. Currently, I have around 11 chapters done and a sequel already partially written. This is going to be a "long-fic."

But some things are never truly lost.

The takeover of Ba Sing Se went splendidly for Azula. She got exactly what she wanted (at least, that's what she told herself) and did what she had been sent to do. She could return home to the Fire Nation as a victorious princess, once again proving her worth as the future Fire Lord.
One can only assume that, if things went well for Azula, then they did not end so well for Team Avatar.
Aang has to find himself a firebending teacher, and he knows time is running out before Ozai wreaks havoc during Sozin's comet. (which includes, but is not limited to, abandoning his daughter for world domination, causing the second genocide but it's Earth Kingdom edition, and overall being the jerk everyone knows he is)
Will Aang find a teacher?
Oh, yes he will.
He just has to keep his options open.
(aka Azula questions her life choices, Katara thinks bloodbending can be good, and everything descends into chaos for a while)

Zuko realizes a few years earlier that the avatar hunt was just a reason to get him away, away from the fire loard, away from the palace, and away from the fire nation.
And so he travels, travels with his uncle in the Earth Kingdom as a traveling tea shop that sets up here and there until they move to the next place. But suddenly they get separated, but they both promise to find each other in Gaoling within a few months.
As Zuko tries to stay low, he meets an earthbending girl who proclaims herself to be the best earthbender in the world. Despite being like, eleven. And so, they stick together, and continue to stick together even when Iroh comes back, and only stop sticking together when Iroh tells Zuko that he has a place he wants to show him. But as they say that their last stop will be in ba sing see, the girl mentions that her family has a vacation house there, and that they'll meet again.
And so when Toph is in Ba Sing Se with the Gaang, why shouldn't she try to find them again? Besides, the tea shop in the middle ring called the Jasmine Dragon sounds very familiar.
