Before the time of the Avatar the spirits danced. As the humans grew, they learned from the dances and eventually made it their own. They gained the gifts of elements from the spirits who fell in love with their dance. In order to keep balance between those with different gifts, the Avatar was not the only spirit that moved through humans. The spirits of the major elements also bonded themselves to a human vessel, much like the Avatar spirit. That souldbonded human was to serve as the link between the great spirit and the human world. They were also meant to be the teachers of the Avatar to assist in keeping balance in a world full of wonder and power.
That was true, until everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.

While recovering from his injury on his ship, Zuko overhears Iroh telling Jee about Zuko's banishment and telling him that Ozai had no intention taking him back. Not long after, Zuko abandons his ship in the night, disappearing into the Earth Kingdom. Zuko doesn't wake up after the Lightning strikes his chest. It's too quick, and he can't siphon its blow. He falls, slowly dying. Slow enough to see his sister fighting Katara. Slow enough to see their battle unfold. When he finally succumbs the last thing he sees is Katara rushing over a second too late, trying futilely to save his life.
The only thing he hears are Azula's screams and cries, as she sits chained to the grate in a sobbing mess. When Zuko finally succumbs to his wounds he hears her cry.
When he wakes he hears a laugh, and it's the laugh of a child.

Zuko and Katara are married, ruling the Fire Nation together. While deeply in love, Katara occasionally struggles with possessiveness and resentment toward past trauma, especially with Aang. She is secretly one month pregnant, a truth she hides even from Zuko.
Azula, imprisoned for war crimes and years of instability, is granted early release under a global political deal. Instead of execution or continued confinement in the Fire Nation, she is transferred to the Air Nation under Aang’s direct custody—both as reparations for the war and as a chance at personal rehabilitation. Aang alone visited her consistently during her imprisonment, earning her attachment and—unspoken—romantic, almost submissive affection. She acts composed and cutting around others, but crumbles emotionally under Aang’s attention.
