Summary
The final battle is nearing an end.
═══════════════════
He knew what was happening - somebody, something, was chopping Vecna's head off. Somebody who had an axe. Somebody who hated Vecna. Somebody who lacked the upper body strength to hack his head off in one clean strike.
"Mom," Will gasped, choking on dust and air and pain.

Summary
Mike visits the library to pick up a book for class, only to stumble upon a funny-looking hardback about something called Dungeons & Dragons.
═══════════════════
"Okay, um. So, my mom got us all these binders that we're gonna be keeping our papers in," Mike began, handing out the binders to each of his friends. His mom had been really nice to him lately, which Mike was pretty sure had to do with Nancy being grounded.
"I was thinking... Will, you don't have to, but since you're really good at art and stuff," Will preened. Mike was playing him like a fiddle, and he didn't feel guilty in the slightest. "It would be really cool if you could, like... put our names on the spines, and kind of decorate them, you know what I mean?"
Will grinned, his face pink. "Um, yeah, of course. After today, I can take them all home and... do that."
Smiling, Mike gave him the best hug he could, considering their seats were across the table from each other.
"So, are we starting?" Dustin asked, tapping his binder. "I'm excited. You said you were up all night, so it better be good."
"It better be," Lucas echoed, squinting at Mike.

Summary
Following a return to relative normality, the residents of Hawkins, Indiana enjoy a well-earned summer vacation.
═══════════════════
Dustin moaned, patting his stomach and slouching. "I think I ate too much."
"You think?" Lucas scoffed good-naturedly, kicking the empty pint of mint chocolate ice cream towards Dustin's feet. Dustin gave a rattling sigh, curling in on himself instead of kicking it back.
"Dude, I told you mint chocolate sucks," Mike said, nudging Dustin's shoulder. Unsurprisingly, he was flipped the bird. Oh, double bird. Nice. "Toothpaste," Mike whispered into Dustin's ear, drawing out the vowels.
"I wish I had four hands so I could flip you off even more," Dustin lamented, burying his forehead into the worn red cushions.

Summary
Here is what Jonathan will not say: I stabbed my boss in the neck with a pair of scissors. I watched him die, and I didn’t even like him. I can’t leave you and Mom in California to go to Boston because I’m paralyzed by the fear something will happen, and you’ll both die, and I’ll be 3,000 miles away.
Ultimately, Jonathan will not lay his issues, his trauma, at Will’s feet and ask his younger brother, who cried when their father stepped on bugs and who has seen horrors Jonathan will never understand, to deal with it.
[Or: On the way back to Hawkins, Jonathan observed. Outside a motel in Kansas, Jonathan and Will have a conversation.]
