Summary
When Will needs to get his thoughts out of his head, he writes a letter he never intends to send. He addresses it to Mike, and tells him everything.
Feeling lighter than he has in weeks and buoyed by the adrenaline of writing it all out, Will acts on an impulse and ends the letter with, "If you’d be willing to give me a chance, I’d be really happy to date you. If you’re open to trying it, please meet me in Castle Byers this Saturday at 2:00pm. I’m not asking for any promises, I’m not asking for forever or anything like that; all I’m asking is that you give me a chance. Come if you want; if not, I completely understand, no hard feelings, and I’ll never, ever mention this again."
He forgets all about the letter, and the distinctive red envelope he stowed it in, until he turns around to find it missing. Now, Will has to think of some way to stop Mike from reading that letter - or should he wait at Castle Byers on Saturday at 2:00pm and pray for a miracle?

“No.” The word escapes Mike’s lips, and it’s barely a whisper. Tears blur his vision, and he turns back around to El, trembling. “N-no, that… that can’t be right… Will… he-he can’t be gone, El; he can’t be dead—”
“Oh, Mike,” El whispers. She reaches up, wiping the tears from Mike’s eyes, and there’s a look on her face—so tender and so, so kind. “Isn’t this what you wanted?”
Her words hit like a bucket of ice water being dumped on him, and Mike recoils, staring at his girlfriend—no, wait, his wife—in horror. “W-what? How… how could you say that, El? How could you say that?!”

Summary
Will’s jaw goes slack, when he realises it’s Mike’s handwriting. He doesn’t know if he wants to read them - the letters being probably unsent drafts to El - but curiosity takes the best of him.
The first thing he spots when he picks up the nearest piece of paper is love, Mike at the bottom and Will’s head starts spinning.
He doesn’t get to take a proper look at the top - at something that looked suspiciously like dear Will, but he might as well be hallucinating at this point - because the door bursts open again.
“Will? You were supposed to wait for me! What-”
Mike stops dead in his tracks, when he notices what Will’s holding. His face falls and he looks nothing short of terrified.

Summary
“Since when do you smoke?”
The words hit Mike like a wall. He sucked in a breath too fast, coughing as the smoke caught in his throat. He bent forward, hand over his mouth, sputtering.
“Shit,” he muttered, his voice coming out low and rough as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
He looked up slowly, and the boy standing in front of him was a version of Will that Mike had not yet gotten used to.
Jesus, when did he start smoking? It felt like a lifetime ago. As he thought about it further, a small realization hit him.
He started smoking the night that Will left for California.
Or
Will moves back from California, and when he and Mike end up living together, they realize how much they’ve both changed, and must figure out how to navigate the tension, awkwardness, and unspoken feelings between them.
