The stairs creak as Mike steps down. Stalking Will, like his prey.
He’s hunting.
Mike emerges from the shadows, dark-eyed with an eerily blank expression. His chest is heaving while his fingers curve erratically at his sides. Sweat beads along his temple and drips to his jawline. He looks like a wreck.
He looks nothing like the teenage boy Will met less than a half-hour ago.
Mike looks like a monster.
It is in this moment that Will realizes he’s made a terrible mistake.
Mike’s going into a rut, and Will meets the wrong boy, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
