Nezuko looks around wildly for Tanjiro, eyes darting to the large houses, the shadowed gardens, the pools of darkness behind each lamppost. Nothing.
There’s a loud yelp, an out-of-place animal noise that startles Nezuko into looking down.
A tanuki is grinning at her, practically vibrating with energy. It chitters, barring tiny little teeth at her, and Nezuko sees a bamboo muzzle dangling around its throat, almost hidden in a familiar blue scarf.
Her breath catches in her throat.
“Tanjiro? ”

On that fateful day, Tanjiro takes everyone down the mountain with him, while Nezuko stays home. It changes their lives forever.

He followed his sister’s gaze to the ocean, and even if he wasn’t a Hydrokinetic, he felt the call too, although differently. The sea was adventure, freedom, a place where a stray wave or striking shadow wouldn’t hurt someone just because of a lapse in control.
It was all Keefe could do to keep the near-manic grin from sliding over his face. His veins were singing with the promise of wind in his hair and salt in the breeze, and the promise of months on end with nothing but the ocean was pulling him along.Sometimes the only escape is the sea.
