Summary
Will asks, "What if you were talking to a friend who was a girl?" but he doesn't mean Max, Mike’s actual friend who is a girl. No, Will’s asking what would you tell me if I were a girl? and the answer to that is something entirely different.
Because if Will were a girl, they wouldn’t be having this conversation at all. If Will were a girl, he wouldn’t be asking questions about how to ask a guy out, because he and Mike would already be dating.
In which Mike has kind of a rough time in college, and talks on the phone about it a lot.

Summary
Fixed points in time are moments in the space-time continuum at which events are set in stone and can never, ever be changed, no matter what, with dire consequences if such a thing happened.
He knows it must eat at him, the confession hanging between them, but Mike doesn’t know what more he can do than show him every day that everything is fine. Good even, these last few months.
Some nights, he lies awake and thinks about how much of one’s life is predetermined. He thinks about the campaigns he’s building, the path he wants to send his Party on, and what choices along the way can affect their course. Which points are fixed, unchangeable.
Or five times Mike corrects himself plus one time he doesn't.

Will’s baffled expression does not change. “Then why would I be?”
“So– okay, fine, whatever. Should we, like, tell them to get their heads out of their asses and that we’re not– um– dating, or–”
“I think,” Will cuts in, “well. You know what would be funny?”
Honestly, Mike doesn't know what he thought being Will Byers' fake-boyfriend would entail, but he definitely didn't think it would involve this many ugly Christmas sweaters.
