But tonight is the night of The Joining. Tonight, the two stars of Gamma Virginis, the two lovers, will meet. Tonight, Porrima will once again be whole.
"Of course, their joining is something of an optical illusion," the ambassador had told him earlier that evening. "We understand the science. But still, in our culture, this binary eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, a magical time when anything can happen. This will be a night of miracles and surprises."
Kirk can almost feel it; the air is crackling with promise. On this sacred night on an alien world, anything is possible.
Or it would be, if Spock had not already left the party.
