“Noted. Excuse me, ma’am?” Arthur asked, slightly louder than usual. “Could I perhaps bother you for a paper?”
Arthur placed what he hoped was five cents into the woman’s palm (John was always so blastedly cursory when it came to handling their funds—) and allowed him to open the proffered paper and scan the headlines. “Anything interesting?”
Before John could reply, the waitress chuckled. “Sad to say, you might be disappointed! Not much happens on the 30th of March. Refill?”
Arthur didn’t fully register the last word, nor the offer, his mind instead scraping to a near-audible halt.

Summary
The castle—or a manor so large, it very well could have been considered one—loomed above him with all the gothic decadence of something straight from the silver screen, near-anachronistic in its weathered bricks and black stonework and not one, not two, but four turrets which pierced the roiling clouds above as if daring whatever god resided there to strike them.
He wanted to turn back, wanted to change his mind and follow the path in the opposite direction.
Gritting his teeth, Arthur half-climbed, half-dragged himself up the stone steps to the massive double-doors of the abode, pausing a moment at the top to catch his breath. He lifted his hand to the enormous, brass knocker and drew it back.
He knocked.

Awaking in the middle of the woods, injured, and with no recollection of how he came to be there, Arthur decides his best option is to seek shelter for the night before finding his way back to Arkham; back to his wife and daughter. In a stroke of fortune, he stumbles upon an old manor and soon realizes he may have bitten off more than he can chew... -

Gradually, who Arthur was came out. In the way he dealt with death. The way he talked to kids. The way he steered clear of certain cases.
Parker would ask him about it only every so often and, as much as he was a bit of a hard-ass, he knew what it looked like when he pushed Arthur the wrong way. He was a sensitive soul. Parker knew not to push.

Summary
She could have just left, could have easily retreated the few paces back to the door and quietly slipped out, nobody the wiser. After all, the mystery of the noise was solved. She could have done that. Frankly, she should have done that. She was obviously invading upon an artist’s private moment, far from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the campus. Maybe anyone else might have found it odd he was alone, without even a single friend or class-chum complaining from the seats that they needed to hurry along. The music room may as well have been an entirely different world.
Suddenly, she found that she didn’t wish to depart from it yet. So she didn’t, striding instead to the first row of chairs and sitting down.

Summary
There had been times, there, in the beginning of their acquaintanceship with one another, that Arthur would have liked nothing more than to rend the King’s fragment from the fabric of his psyche and have his own goddamn eyes returned to him. He would have done anything to make it so, even if that meant the suffering of John before he had ever had the chance to receive the name.
And now he had both.
For some reason, some god had smiled down upon him for the first time in his fucking life and he was able to stumble out of hell with all five senses and that second soul safely housed in its own flesh.
Like a fucking miracle.
He only wished his part of the miracle didn’t sting so violently.

Summary
“I know I haven’t been the most forthcoming with information, and I’m sorry; I do trust you, it’s just… These forces that surround me, Oscar, they’re not to be trifled with. You’ve witnessed firsthand the damage one creature can do, let alone the dozens, thousands of entities in worlds far more dangerous than anything you or I could imagine.” He hesitated. No. John had wanted this. He deserved to make his own choices, as much as he was able. “Earlier, you asked who…‘John’ was.”
“‘No one you’ll ever meet,’” Oscar echoed quietly. “Aye. I didn’t mean to pry.”
“No, no, you didn’t. I—” He stopped.
You can say it, Arthur.
He took another deep breath. And took the plunge.

Summary
Arthur knew from the moment he woke up that it was going to be one of those days, the same moment he opened his eyes to greet the unchanging black haze of the world and didn’t feel the sliver of sunlight that usually wormed its way between the gap in the drapes.
These days, he had the privilege of rising much later, unless a client’s only workable window of time was in the ungodly hours of morning, which—thankfully—was a rare occurrence. If he stirred in the middle of the night, nightmares were the likely culprit, be they his own or John’s or, on nights when the universe saw fit to add a larger dash of turbulence into their comparatively calmer lives, both.
But there was no light. No birds singing incessantly. Before sunrise, then. And it was another moment later that he realized what had awoken him. Or, in this case, what hadn’t?
Everything ached.

Summary
It was small, a pinprick of light in an otherwise stygian environment. A stray speck of orange paint in a canvas of black. A lit match in an empty well.
Fire.
The exhaustion seemed to double the moment he laid eyes on it, distant though it was. A large part of him wanted very much to rest beside it, the more cautious part urging him to be wary of these woods and what they contained.
What they hid.
Tales had to come from somewhere, after all.
Whoever had stoked that fire must have been very foolish, indeed. It was with a small amount of surprise that he glanced the way he had come and realized the fire was, in fact, in the direction of…
“The village,” he whispered to the air.
Perhaps most shocking of all, the air responded.
“It’s really close!”

“You know why. We were invited.”
“A stupid reason.”
“I thought you’d be excited. It’s not every day one gets to brush elbows with the upper-crust; to be frank, I never thought my music would catch on as much as it has. I’m really quite flattered.”

“Most traditions are so convoluted, hardly anyone knows their true origins, anyway. Or they’ve morphed so much over the years that they’re basically unrecognizable from their 15th or 16th century counterparts.”
“And…how many traditions are there?”
“Oh, an endless amount. Probably a new one every few years or so. Ever heard of Santa Claus?”
“Who?”
“Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, Kris Kringle?”
“I seriously have no idea what you’re asking me right now.”

Summary
He flexed his toes on the beige carpeting, the fibers tickling his skin. He had so much skin. It was darker than Arthur’s by a couple shades, less a milky white and more a chestnut brown. His hands were larger than Arthur’s, too, but the fingers were the slightest bit shorter.
All ten of them.
All his.
Just like his feet. Just like his eyes, and his arms, and his legs, and his hair. He had hair now, incessantly tickling him where it fell against his collarbone in dark waves, drooping in front of his face with every shift of his head.
Everything belonged to him and him alone. Just like he’d wanted.
So why did that thought make him sick to his stomach?

Summary
A gentle touch on his leg snapped John back to the present, once again. Arthur quickly removed his hand, glancing to the cab driver, then back to John. “You’re sure nothing’s the matter?”
Uneasiness curled Arthur’s shoulders inward, furrowed his brows. He could never seem to stop worrying, could he? John felt something ache deep within him.
“I’m fine, Arthur. Just…admiring.”
“Admiring?”
“Yes. The sky, it’s… It’s really beautiful.”

“Give me your hand,” he instructed, low enough so as not to wake Arthur.
Obediently, John did so. He didn’t know what he’d been expecting, but, whatever it was, it wasn’t something light and somewhat soft being slipped over his wrist. A few adjustments later the mystery item was snug against his skin, not too tight and not too loose.
"There. How does it feel?”
John reached over to tap his reply. What, exactly, is ‘it’?
Noel laughed, the sound rumbling off the walls. “A bracelet.”

Summary
Even now, Arthur acquiesced to him wondering around a bit on his own, content to tuck into some lunch at a diner further in town, which was precisely how John found himself frozen before the double doors of Edith Mordent Memorial Hospital.
Alone.
This is why he had come here to begin with, wasn’t it? To check.
To check what, exactly? That she was still working here? That she hadn’t been fired after Arthur had stumbled from his room on trembling legs in the middle of the night, effectively proving the ineptitude of the hospital’s staff and security? That she hadn’t been injured or possessed or devoured by some otherworldly creature left in their wake?
That she would remember him?
John grasped the delusion by the tail before it could carry him away with it. That’s all it was. A delusion cleverly disguised as a dream.
So why the fuck was he entertaining it?
