Instead of Thor striking Loki down in fury once Odin vaporizes, Jormungandr bites Thor. Loki tends the bite so Thor recovers, indeed, sees Loki holding Mjolnir with ease. Loki tells Thor the spell to prevent anyone else lifting it died with its caster. Thor is agog.

OMG, YES! Laufey gets the Casket, acknowledges Loki is his son, and takes Thor hostage, putting the SAME spell on him that Odin used on Loki, so Thor looks like a Jotun! If only Laufey could erase Thor's memory and make him Jotun the way Odin made Loki Aesir!

When Frigga learns what happened, she laughs. I kid you not.
The ONLY other story that shows this type of broken bond between brothers is in Chaper 12 of Lizardbeth's Ragdoll: "You showed him what you were willing to do, and he could never unlearn that, could he?" -

Frigga blocks Loki's memories, implants happy families ones, sticks him in Norway. SHIELD keeps tabs on him, until they lose him. Pepper hires him as a translator. Tony notices the "memory block" does not work like it is supposed to, and tries to help.
Excellent cold, aloof Brandr (Loki), when Thor brings Frigga to try to undo or fix the mental block. Loki does not let either one touch him or claim kinship with him. He rebuffs them both. Tony says he tried telling them Loki was not the big boss, but no one listened.
Beautiful memory loss with dangling after effects. -

"I..." Thor glanced towards his mother than back at his small companion, "I -I can't go back," he stuttered.
"What?" Rocket repeated this time in confusion.
"I can't go back," Thor asserted more firmly.
Rocket frowned, "We need you!"
Thor shook his head, "No, you don't...you have the Reality stone. Everyone else would have already gotten the others, Stark will make a gauntlet and...Banner can snap his fingers and bring everyone you all love back..." Thor hung his head for a moment and sighed, "Everyone I love is here."
"What about New Asgard?"
"They don't need me-Val's been leading them," he looked up into Rocket's eyes. "Please Rabbit-don't make me go back," Thor whispered brokenly.Steve got to have his happily ever after in the past so I think Thor should have been able to have his family.

Or at least, I thought it was a one-shot, but the story had other ideas. Added two chapters; a ten-years-later and an epilogue.

Odin confronts Sif et al after banishing Thor and tells them it was a test and Thor failed it. He bids them be helpmates to Loki as they had been for Thor, that Loki somehow avert war with Jotunheim. It takes Jane 10 years to make a Bifrost bridge to Asgard, but Thor is still not "worthy" of Mjolnir.
