Barbatos scrunched his nose, still frowning.
Sighing, Morax leaned forward, his breath hot on the anemo archon’s neck. “There will be a yaksha general here at all times as well as either I, Guizhong, or one of the adepti. The only thing that can harm the child are nightmares, so we will do what we can to bring them sweet dreams.”
Barbatos was quiet for a long time after that, letting Morax straighten pins and remove broken quills. A few of the nicer ones he set aside to be turned into writing instruments. It was when he was brushing off stray down and flakes of skin did the other speak, just as quiet as before.
“Okay.”
___The middle of the Archon War, which monsters and scheming backstabbing gods in every corner of the continent, was not the best time and place to let a child enter the world. Barbatos and Morax find this out the hard way.
AKA Barbatos and Morax are Xiao's biological parents and canon events still happen.

The baby dragon leans into his ministrations, idly flicking its tongue to taste the air.
~What is a name?~He laughs, ~ Something other’s call to address you ~
The dragon waits a moment, calculating its answer.
~Then I have no name.~
Breaking the quiet, Venti exclaims, his voice echoing around the chamber. “Let’s find you a name. It is one of life’s pleasures to be called upon.” He stands, brushing off the debris clinging to his stockings. “Why you must have a name!”

Surprised by the sudden and completely unsolicited comment, Xiangling looks up from her wok, tracing her father's eye to said Mr. Zhongli, leaning over an antique vase at one of the roadside stores. In her time at Wanmin Restaurant, however, she has certainly seen her fair share of strange customers, so after a moment, she just turns back to her frying, flipping the xianbing in the wok over one by one.
"Why do you say that?" she asks, reaching across the counter for the cooking oil.
"Dearest daughter," Chef Mao says then, "he is lecturing the seller on the origins of his own vase."
Liyue Harbor is hive full of incorrigible gossips. Xiangling navigates the rumor mill, goes ingredient hunting with Zhongli, and in the process, finds out that Zhongli is very, very bad at pretending to be human.

Kaeya leans against the doorway, watching as Lawrence places at report atop Jean's desk. Sighing, Jean tiredly rubs at her brow, before offering a curt nod.
"Thank you," she says. "I will deal with the complaint shortly."
Pushing off the doorway, Kaeya saunters past Lawrence, picking the report up, and casually flipping through it. Jean shoots him a stern look, but does not tell him to put it back down.
"It's from one of the sisters," Kaeya observes, and reads aloud. "Perpetrator scaled statue outside church while drunk and sang loudly for three hours."
Lawrence lets out a delicate cough.
As Weinlesefest draws near, Kaeya notices a new mystery in the city of wind and wine — Jean and Diluc have been oddly permissive with Venti since the Stormterror Incident. Mischievously determined to get to the bottom of this, Kaeya soon makes a discovery that threatens to upend everything he knows. In the process, he must reconcile what it means to be Khaenri'ahn, and to love a city that belongs to a god.
