The truth is that all Jihoon has smelled for the past half hour is the meat from the animal Mingyu had caught earlier, a rare thing in this dystopian reality. The truth is that Chan, 37 days single, glows in front of the fire. Chan had asked her something first, something that loosened the perpetual lump in her throat, the world around her fading to dull noise as her world narrowed to just Chan.
“Dino-yah,” Jihoon calls, “will you come for a walk with unnie tonight?”
She wishes she could have drunk something tonight. Had something to help her be braver, stronger, be something that she’s not used to being around Chan. But she has the patrol shift in the morning so she can’t drink any of the meager alcohol the others had found earlier.
