Summary
After the tsunami, Buck doesn't become a fire marshal. He joins Dispatch, and he works there until he is cleared to go back to work once he is off the blood thinners. But Buck's confidence in himself and his abilities has been shot ever since he lost Christopher in the tsunami, blame and fear convincing him that he isn't ready to go back to firefighting because he doesn't trust himself anymore. So, at dispatch he stays.
Until a call to 3-Alarm fire downtown goes sour and leads to the first responders scrambling for help, but help isn't coming.
Until Buck realises he is the only help available.

“You think he knows?”
Eddie shrugs, only half-heartedly batting at Buck’s hand as he goes to dip his fries into Eddie’s milkshake. Buck just sticks his tongue out childishly before shoving the fries into his mouth and Eddie rolls his eyes. It does nothing to rid the adoration from his face, so Buck doesn’t take it too personally.
“I dunno, I think he might suspect something.”
Buck takes another fry, dangling it by his mouth for a moment. “Shame,” he says, taking a bite, “I was enjoying nobody knowing.”

Summary
Post-Lawsuit. Bobby transfers Buck to a different shift under Captain Simmons. He tells himself that it’s for both of them. He’s still hurt, but he also knows that he can’t keep a clear head when it comes to Buck; that he cares about him too much. Only, for the rest of the team it further punctuates their own feelings, and widens the chasm between them and Buck. For Buck, seeing Bosko in his place hurts more than words can describe, yet a week off in Chicago with his brother gives him a lot more than he ever thought he deserved. When tragedy strikes, can apologies be made and rifts healed?
