Andy thinks, desperate for the briefest of moments, that she needs more time for this, for Nile, more time to guide her, to prepare her, more time to carry the weight that has been breaking her back for millennia so that Nile can live without the pressure on her spine. He kissed another woman sometime in the 1920s and felt little guilt and then a rush of reflexive guilt for the lack thereof. It was a strange quagmire, his impulse to remain faithful to his long dead wife for all that it had been a century since she passed and he still remained. There was a loneliness in him that the others couldn’t quite fill and he craved companionship, though he knew that it was transient by nature. It would be foolish and reckless, to crave for romantic love from a mortal whom he would have to leave so quickly, and so he didn’t.
But there was still the matter of companionship, wasn’t there?
He kissed another man sometime in the 1980s and felt a small thrill and the sharp edge of old Catholic guilt. That was far easier to brush aside.

Summary
If anyone would ask Booker why he chases Death, he would tell them. It wouldn’t be an answer anyone would expect.
If they would ask Joe, he’d say it is because Booker is selfish. If Nicky, he’d say that Booker is naïve. If Andy is asked, she’d probably just laugh and say that Booker is bored.
But if anyone bothers to ask Booker? He would say that the others aren’t wrong, but they aren’t exactly right, either. Booker would give chase, over and over again, without fail. Because Death gives him the one thing he values above all others: quiet.
Booker is incredibly gifted and has an extreme case of hyperthymesia. He doesn’t remember everything. But what he does remember, he just doesn’t forget.

Summary
Nicolò looks sheepish. "I killed you yesterday, and you awoke at the same time, the same place. But when I die, I wake at different times, different places. This bolt," he tosses it to Yusuf and it lands in the dirt by his knee, "it killed me yesterday, but I woke up many years from now. I lived several lifetimes in those places before returning here and pulling it from my neck."
Nicky's lives and deaths are different. He is unstuck from time - at every death he revives into a different point in his life. Each time he is struck down he wonders, will he awaken to deserts and swords? Will it be gunshots in cities? Joe and Nicky build a fractured life together, falling in love across two different sets of centuries, then patiently waiting for the other to fall in love too. He meets the rest of their little family out of order, but they still build a family around Nicky's involuntary time-traveling.

Summary
In which Mumbo crosses several towns, learns some creative methods of self-defense, fights some monsters, sees things no human is meant to have seen, befriends a stranger, steals multiple cars, has inconvenient moral scruples, grows increasingly terrified of his own culpability in the apocalypse, grows a spine, blows up at least one building, accidentally prevents a murder, and attempts to find his best friend in the futile but ever-burning hope the man’s still alive.
He has to say, he’s so exhausted and terrified that he thinks he might just be mad?
(OR: the one where, after most of humanity turns into a series of terrifying monsters, Mumbo decides he’s going to risk his life on an apocalypse road trip to try to find out if Grian is alive. Things, as you might imagine, devolve from there.)
