The warm heat radiating from the espresso machines was the only thing standing between swift death of hypothermia and the workers by the wondrous, outrageous winter of North York.
Although the café itself was doing pretty well - financially at least. The officious boss insisted otherwise, implementing ridiculous budget cuts, the missing money quietly filling the emptiness of his own pockets.
Other than the minor inconveniences of the banal yet unpredictable place, the café could have seemed like a home. From earning extra cash to studying for finals, to awkward dates or even just another hangout with a bevy of overbearing teens- the place had room for all, unabated and usually under-caffeinated.
Despite the shop’s success, it did little to alleviate the burden on the overworked staff. At the second high school, approximately five underpaid team members were expected to be proficient in all aspects of the job.
After the last incident where a waiter lashed out on the customers and quit their job, the boss decided to put in his two cents and take some responsibility.
Despite the understaffed predicament, the workers managed. Or at least most of them did.
