In the 1840s, the British Empire shadows the world, but a bitter quarrel between Wales and England tears open an old wound. In his fury, Wales strikes too deep, and Arthur’s composure shatters. From his own lips falls a confession darker than Dylan ever imagined. Now admiration twists to revulsion, envy to guilt, as Wales confronts the terrible secret at the heart of their island.
"He needed lessons—reminders—that I’m no country to be trampled.” Scotland's gaze drifted past Wales then, focusing on the coat of arms of the British Empire hung above the fire— the rampant red lion of the north and the golden lion of the south, bound together by crown and shield. The firelight shimmered across it, making the lions seemed to snarl, claws poised. For an instant, Wales was struck with the illusion that the centuries had peeled away—that before him stood not the noble of empire. For indeed, Scotland’s teeth bared faintly, something feral flickering across his face, reminding Wales of those shadowed times when his brother’s skin had been marked with woad, blue spirals of warrior tribes winding over flesh like living symbols of defiance.

England is curled up against the telephone box, shaking so hard he's practically convulsing. Cradling himself. Scratching incessantly at his arm. The cold, hard light of the streetlamps aren't a flattering look on anyone, but they render England downright corpselike, his face pale and gaunt. His mouth hangs open, lips dry and cracked, chest heaving with laboured breaths.
"Oh, cariad," Wales whispers, voice breaking. "What have you done?"
It's the 80s. England comes home for the first time in months.

Wales was not ashamed to admit that he was hiding in the kitchen. These things were bad enough without having a very physical countdown, and his siblings had been hell over the last week. From Scotland’s last-minute nerves and his bad attempts at hiding them to North’s panicked fluttering, although at least he had not been trapped in a car for ten hours with either of them. God, he hated the M1.
“I’m sorry, but I have to ask. How can you be so calm? Your Union might dissolve tonight, your family might break apart.” The attendant disturbing his hiding spot queried. Unbidden Wales laughed.
“The Union doesn’t make us family. Legislation is for humans, not for us. Besides-” he shot her a soft smile over his mug, “this isn’t our first union, although it is our most successful. We’ve been though this before, maybe this time we’ll figure it all out. I doubt it. Either way, I know that whatever happens tonight, I personally will be in the same position as last night. Like I said, it is not the Union that makes us family.”
