Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.
On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.
Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

Summary
Shane was an omega, or he was going to be, his test results were clear on that fact. It wasn't technically the end of the world, omegas were technically allowed in the MHL, but there were rules. Rules for safety. Rules like having to be mated. So he needed to suck it up, socialise and find an alpha who was willing to mate an eighteen year old who wanted to play ice hockey, a sport known for it's tendency to land players in hospital with permanent dissabilities.
Enter Ilya Rozanov, an Epa alpha who made the unusualness of Shane's male omega status practically normal by comparison. But they had something in common, a frustrating safety rule barring them both entry to the MHL without a mating bond. Someone really should have thought that one through before letting two young dumb teenagers make one of the biggest decisions of their lives for the love of hockey. -

Ilya is taken aback by Hollander shoving him. “What, are you going to fight me to look tough in front of your famous new girlfriend?” Ilya snaps back.
Hollander scoffs, “So that’s what this is? You’re jealous because I’m dating a movie star?”
Ilya scoffs back, “Oh shut up Hollander, do not be ridiculous. I do not care who you date,” Ilya knows that his words aren’t true, he isn’t sure if Hollander knows that.
“Oh, really,” Hollander says sarcastically, “then why are you trying to make my life miserable right now?”
“I am not doing anything, Hollander,” Ilya yells. “I am playing fucking game! You should be too, has Rose Landry been distracting you from that?”
“I knew this was about Rose! I can’t believe you. What? Have you not been sleeping around with a different woman every night, anymore? Has that knocked you off your game so you chose to take your anger out on me? Is that it, Rozanov?”

The scorching sun beat down on the three men. With the events of the last 24 hours, they certainly felt like much less of men. Hayden Pike brushed his sweaty salt and blood laden hair away from his eyes with a harsh motion from his bruised palm, moving to put his head between his legs.
“Fuck. I think it’s time,” Hayden muttered.
The dead silence from Marleau and JJ was enough of an agreement to convince Hayden to pull his phone with a broken screen out of his tattered khaki shorts. The phone rang and he waited, holding his breath. To his relief and equal regret, the call went through.
“Where is he? Where the fuck is my fiancé Pike?” Ilya barked on the other line, his voice almost poisonous.
Hayden sighed shakily, unsure of what to say.Ilya wasn’t in the mood for waiting, especially right now. “Fucking spit it out Pike. I can hear you panting on the other side.”
A pause.
