Summary
'Suicide' was a word tucked in soft quilt blankets and shoved in the deeper parts of his mind, even as he saw patients day-in, day-out who were outwardly, or in some capacity could be considered suicidal. [...] No one knows, never knew. Also, no one can be surprised. If they look further, they'll see just the extent of what he's hidden in plain sight from his childhood.

Carter has struggled with suicidal ideation for years. A night shift is almost his undoing. -

Summary
Standing with his back to the door is a behemoth of a man, grunting and snorting like a wild boar in a trap- and in the man’s grasp, pinned against the wall by the paws around his neck, is John Carter. Dead-eyed and slack as he dangles there like a marionette.
Mark's brain short circuits. He stumbles back. Yells for security, his own voice strangled, yet doesn't wait for the reinforcements to come, because the boy’s lips are tinged blue, and he isn't fighting like he should be.
OR
Carter gets strangled by a patient. Set in S1.

Summary
Set in S3. John Carter is hospitalized with a bad case of pneumonia. Eleanor Carter arrives at County General to sit at his bedside. Her visit, however, is motivated not by love for her ailing son, but by something far more selfish. Peter Benton comes to realize that his student's family life is not just complicated, but in fact deeply troubling.
Eleanor Carter didn’t ask questions about how John was doing, about his prognosis, while Peter walked her to John’s room. She doesn’t reach out to him now, doesn’t hold his hand or comb his sweat-slick hair from his feverish forehead. She doesn’t soothe him with comforting, loving words.
She just… sits there. Expression wooden and disinterested. And her eyes keep looking at the door.

Summary
A follow-up to my post-stabbing catatonia fic "i will try to fix you" .
After two weeks in a catatonic state following the stabbing, John Carter faces a slow, painful, and complicated recovery. Peter Benton is unsure if his former student will ever be the same. It doesn't help that Carter hasn't spoken a single word since waking up.
Peter had accrued a massive amount of vacation days over the last few years, and he was finally cashing in, spending his days with Carter.
He couldn’t stomach the thought of the kid being alone, not even for a second. Not after everything that had happened. No. Peter was going to be there, through the physical therapy and the respiratory therapy and the occupational therapy. He supposes when the time comes for actual therapy therapy, he’ll get kicked out. But he’ll cross that bridge when they get to it.

Summary
the momentum threw him partially over the bed rail and towards some medical instruments, making it all clatter to the floor loudly—but to be honest? , he couldn’t give less fucks about the medical equipment right now—before the nurses and security swarmed to re-secure the restraints.
“Carter!” he heard Dr. Benton bark out as he ate a fistful of fists onto his ribs (hah!).

Carter is probably having what's usually described in medical text books as a mental breakdown and also gets fisted (pun!) Peter benton has no idea wtf Carter is thinking

Summary
All throughout the procedure, Peter half expects Carter to burst in, panting, sweating, full of apologies and claiming some excuse: the El was delayed, he'd overslept, his apartment had burned down again. Peter would brush him off and kick him out of the operating room, then send him to do his scut work and really think about his commitment to this program.
But Carter never shows.
OR
After Gant's death, Peter shuts Carter out. When Carter goes missing, Peter fears the worst and vows to stop at nothing to find him.

Summary
Carter didn’t mean to.
God, he didn’t fucking mean to.
He sat hunched on the floor of the dirty bathroom, knees up to his chest, arms wrapped around his middle like he could squeeze the truth out of him, like maybe he could wring the life back out through his pores. The pregnancy test lay on the cracked tile like a taunt. Pink. Positive. Final.
The overhead bulb buzzed like a dying insect. Flickered every few seconds like God was blinking at him—watching. Judging.

Summary
Every instinct tells him to stand up and run. This isn’t Carter. He can’t bear to look at this lifeless husk that used to shine so brightly. The thought of never seeing those big brown eyes again, never receiving another toothy grin, sends a cold shiver down his spine. He wants to curse and scream and hide.
Then he remembers Carol’s words: Talk to him, it might help both of you.

Summary
Peter went a whole month without seeing John Carter, the severely accident prone 23-year-old who liked to talk to anyone he could. When Peter removed his sutures a month ago, the guy chatted away to him, the nurses, and the patient on the bed next to him. He constantly had something to say, and it drove Peter crazy. But a month had passed, and Peter almost forgot about his head lac (and black eye) patient until Lydia was handing him a chart.
"Chatty kid is back with a hand laceration in need of sutures." Peter opened the chart to see 'John Carter' and he sighed. He thought about handing the case off to Brown (who had not improved in the last month) but decided against it. Peter needed to practice his sutures anyway.

Carter knows it was wrong of him to lie to Carol, of all people. Lie and tell her that someone is home, when really, Gamma won't be back for another week and his parents are off God knows where. Carol, who's the first to ask him how his weekend was or ask after the few family members he's mentioned in passing to his co-workers. Carol, who always, without fail, brings him water and snacks after his anxiety kicks his ass or even if he's just forgotten to eat during a shift. Summary
A fuck-up at work triggers bad memories and bad habits for John Carter. In the midst of a record heat wave, Carter goes for a punishing run on his family's property, with terrible consequences. Peter Benton to the rescue.
He puts his fingers to Carter’s neck, and is horribly unsurprised at the weak, thready, and extremely rapid pulse he feels beneath the skin. Tachycardic. Very tachycardic.
A hand on John’s forehead is all but confirmation of Peter’s fears. His face is blazing hot, more like touching a furnace than human skin.
Heat stroke.
