Summary
Will’s voice trails off, and he runs a hand over his face. Mike waits a few moments to see if he’ll say anything else, but when Will doesn’t, he takes a shaky breath and tries to find his own courage.
“And you thought, what?” Mike whispers. “That - that it wouldn’t mean as much to me if it came from you?”
Will flinches. He’s still turned away from Mike, and there’s a desperation in his voice when he whispers back, “Mike, please…”

“You like it,” he teased. The words tasted the way jumping off a cliff felt. His stomach swooped up towards his heart and his pulse maybe skipped a beat. Will’s eyes narrowed at him, and his face was impossible to read.
“I guess I do, or we wouldn’t be friends this long,” he snorted, and broke their eye contact, focusing back on the path ahead of them and walking a few paces ahead. The word friend felt like a small dagger, but the way Will’s voice shaped it dulled the edges.
“Best friends,” Mike corrected, picking up his pace so they were still right next to each other. So he could pretend the way his fingers glanced over the back of Will’s hand was an accident.
Mike refuses to watch Will die again, no matter how determined he is to sacrifice himself. Vecna has other plans.

It’s fine. It’s totally fine. He’ll just go to sleep- and when he wakes up tomorrow, he’ll forget that this crisis had ever even happened. He closes his eyes, and tries to turn off his brain. It shouldn’t be too hard, probably. He’s heard Max make that joke enough times to suspect that there might be some truth in it. After all, Mike has spent this long being oblivious. Surely, he can manage one night more.
Not even an hour later, he finds himself climbing up Will’s bedroom window.
Mike has more realisations in one night than in two whole years. It's all Jonathan's fault.
