Summary
When someone turns 16 a telepathic link opens up to their soulmate. This link allows soulmates to send messages to each other's minds. Soulmates cannot “talk” to each other until both parties are 16. Mike is shocked when his link opens before El's birthday. All he receives from his soulmate is a message saying, “This won’t work out. I’m sorry. I’m already in love with someone.”

Will’s voice trails off, and he runs a hand over his face. Mike waits a few moments to see if he’ll say anything else, but when Will doesn’t, he takes a shaky breath and tries to find his own courage.
“And you thought, what?” Mike whispers. “That - that it wouldn’t mean as much to me if it came from you?”
Will flinches. He’s still turned away from Mike, and there’s a desperation in his voice when he whispers back, “Mike, please…”

When he looked up he saw Mike staring back at him, looking a bit like a wet rat. Mike just waved at him, a small smile on his face and pointed to the door. Pleading to be let inside.
Will got up and moved towards the door, suppressing his laugh while he unlocked the door.
"Hey" Will started, as Mike barged through the door. "you look a bit wet" he continued, finally letting out the laugh he had been suppressing.
Mike just stood a bit closer to him and shook his wet hair, spraying Will with water. It reminded him of a stubborn puppy, albeit a cute one.

“Just think about it, William," Henry continues, likely after he's decided Will has ruminated on this for an appropriate amount of time. "All the things we could do together. We could build a new world, clean up the muck in the one that exists. No one has to get hurt. Think about it. I’ll be waiting for your answer.”
Henry’s arm lurches out in front of him, and all Will can do is stare in horror as one bony finger moves in towards his forehead. His eyes squeeze shut as a fingernail breaches his skin, and his vision goes white, then black.
“Will?”
That is definitely not Henry’s voice.
It's 1987, the Upside Down is infiltrating Hawkins, and Will's new home is Mike Wheeler's basement. As if that isn't bad enough, Will starts having odd dreams. At least, he thinks they're just dreams -- but if they're only dreams, why is he waking up in the Wheeler's front yard?
